Right now, the phrase “The Hitler” is trending on Twitter, with 105,000 tweets.
It’s a tweet containing a photo of President Trump holding up a Bible yesterday at the St. John’s Episcopal Church down the block from the White House, where he walked yesterday after his press conference in the Rose Garden, along with an image of Hitler doing the same.
The text at the bottom reads, “This is not an accident!”
The original tweet was put out by Staten Islander Debra Messing and states, “A dog whistle to white nationalists and Nazis.”

A “dog whistle” has nothing to do with dogs. It’s a political term that refers to a coded message communicated through secret language that might only be understood by a certain group. It might also include images or symbols.
This was a dirty trick. We should shun this sort of lie, whether it’s put out by Democrats, Republicans, or anyone else. The original photograph of Hilter shows the Bible was photoshopped in.
But was this a dog whistle? No; it was merely a Photoshopped image. There are countless other tweets circulating comparing President Trump to Hitler this afternoon:

Craig Silverman had this to say:
“A lot of people are sharing an image that appears to show Trump and Hitler holding a bible in the same way. The Trump pic is from June 1, but the Hitler pic was photoshopped to add the bible.”

Larry O’Connor also tweeted out his disgust with the phony pic:
“Except when the Hitler photo is FAKE it ends up being a dog whistle for desperate, hateful people with no moral compass, like you. Every time you do things like this you lose more and more support. Just. Stop.”

Critics accused President Trump of using the Church, and the Bible, merely as photo props for a media photo. Lafayette square was cleared with flash bangs and tear gas before President Trump’s arrival.
The Bishop overseeing that Church had her own criticism of the visit:
“His officials cleared peaceful protests with horses and tear gas..and held up a Bible…as if it was an extension of his…military position…and stood in front of our building as if it was a propr for his agenda. He did not…pray…He did not mention George Floyd, he did not mention the agony of people who have been subjected to this kind of horrific expression of racism and white supremacy for hundreds of years.”
President Trump walked over and stood silently in front of the boarded-up Church, which had been burned the last night. He held the Bible and only said this, “It’s a Bible. We have a great country. That’s my thoughts. Best country in the world. We’ll make it even greater. It won’t take long. It’s coming back. it’s coming back strong. It will be better than before.”
Others have seen it as standing in solidarity with Faith, and those being unfairly targeted by those rioters transgressing boundaries in the name of George Floyd, who himself had his boundaries transgressed by Minnesota police officers last Monday.
Was this the best our President could do? Were his choice of words so far just contributing more polarization to the issue? President Trump has said all along that it’s a shame what happened to George Floyd. He has never wavered in that.
Perhaps he should clarify his position, as the message is getting conflated at this point.
Is everyone out to show they hate Trump? No; it’s about George Floyd. Please don’t try hijacking the Black people and this cause for your own politics. People from Left to Right have protested. No one has the right to co-opt this for their own agenda. Please stop trying to make this about Trump or Biden or anyone else. It’s about justice for Black people.
