Introducing “Staten Islander Remembers”: Series Exploring Our Island’s Historical Media
Yes, Staten Islander fans, we’re at it yet again. This week, we’re introducing “Staten Islander Remembers.” This will be an ongoing series of clips from historical Staten Island newspapers.
Media of yesteryear was quite different; explore page by page and find out just how different it was.
In our first installment we present The Richmond County Mirror, published in New Brighton. We are including page fourteen of the February 16, 1839 edition.
We’re not going to overwhelm; instead we will bring our readers bite-size chunks, one page at a time.
In this issue, you will find an article about the inauguration of Richmond College. There’s also a short paragraph about a railroad that was being planned by the Staten Island Granite Company. In fact, Staten Islander covered the Graniteville Quarry in a previous article, and the information contained herein only adds details to the story of our island’s once thriving quarries.
There are other short news items, mainly about what was happening across the states.
Read, enjoy, and learn.
