NEW YORK—Brittany Ramos DeBarros, Democratic candidate for Congress in NY-11, released the following statement today on the passage of H.R. 6 and H.R. 1603 in the House of Representatives:
“For years, our immigrant friends, family members, and neighbors have been demonized by administrations that prioritized their pain and made their very existence a crime. It disgusts me to see our current Representative forgo her paid duty and sworn oath to care for all the people of her district by repeating this same, dangerous rhetoric knowing the harm it has caused her community,” Ramos DeBarros said. “We have seen thousands of people who were our beloved neighbors be deported. We’ve seen families separated at the border, ICE raids used to terrorize neighborhoods, and members of our community thrown into prisons designed solely for corporate profit. While we are disappointed that these bills include provisions that continue to criminalize the immigrant community, we still celebrate their passage. We know that creating and expanding pathways to citizenship makes us more secure, not less. We have a long way to go to ensure that the rights and livelihoods of our immigrant communities are protected, but this is a step in the direction of prioritizing care, not criminalization.”
Brittany Ramos DeBarros is a proud Afro-Latina Staten Islander, community organizer, and combat veteran running for Congress in New York’s 11th District. She grew up in a deeply patriotic military family and entered the Army in order to help pay for college. DeBarros’ time in Afghanistan changed her mind about war, as she came home angry, hurt, and feeling betrayed by a system that covered up greed and corruption with the veneer of freedom. She quickly realized that these same problems were happening at home, across the country and directly within her own community. DeBarros is determined to help lead the fight to build a better, more just world; the world that we deserve.
