Statement from Borough President Vito J. Fossella Commending DSNY Commissioner Jessica Tisch on E-waste Collection Expansion for Staten Island
We want to applaud DSNY Commissioner Jessica Tisch for launching a pilot program on Staten Island that expands on the current e-waste program to now accept unwanted batteries and textiles with an appointment-based collection service.
Early last month, the Commissioner joined us in front of Jody’s Club Forest for an announcement of budget allocations from our office to several Staten Island business improvement districts. The goal was to provide resources to these organizations for beautification of their corridors, particularly in the removal of litter. This funding also coincided with the citywide effort, which strives to keep streets clean, improve pickup operations, and maintain public spaces that need ongoing maintenance.
We had discussed at that time the expansion of the e-waste collection program and its impact on Staten Islanders, so we are pleased that Commissioner Tisch followed through on her promise to help homeowners get rid of unwanted items. We also hope the collection of these items will curtail and prevent some of the illegal dumping that happens across the borough. Thank you to the Commissioner and her team for their continued support, and helping Staten Island thrive as a community.
