Asm. Charles Fall, State Sen. Scarcella-Spanton, CM. Hanks, DA McMahon organized a Day Of (Community) Service at P.S.21
Multiple Staten Islanders who heard the call from the politicians braved the bitter cold 26 degree day to help beautify their neighborhood while informing neighbors about flood precautions, assistance, and realities.
The group assembled at Hooker Place and Trantor Place, just behind P.S.21, to have some coffee just before getting to work. Everyone was provided with grabbers and trash bags, and there was quite a lot of litter at the area, which is right next to the highway entrance and exit. As everyone who lives in a city knows, that’s where much of the littering happens: on the highways and their exits.
Everyone chatted amiably while picking up papers, wrappers, food containers, plastic bags, and all kinds of little trash pieces. Some of the litter was frozen into the ground as a testament to the bitterly cold temperatures.

While some cleaned up litter, others went door-to-door in pairs to inform residents about the potential for flooding, along with what they can do to protect themselves before and during a storm.
As Asm. Fall remarked, MLK Day is not supposed to be a day off; it’s seen as a day of service to the community.
