IRS Direct File Demo Webinar – Thursday, April 4th at 6:00 PM

Editor’s note: New York is one of the pilot program-eligible states, and local residents that meet the qualifications can file for free directly with the IRS.  Up until now, electronic filing was required, but many of the e-filing providers charged varying fees for this service.

According the IRS’ Direct File website, the following types of tax filers are eligible to participate in this pilot program:

Income
You may be eligible to join the pilot if you report these income types on your 2023 federal tax return:

You can’t use Direct File if you have other types of income, such as gig economy or business income.

Credits

You can’t use Direct File if you claim other credits like the Child and Dependent Care Credit
Saver’s Credit or the Premium Tax Credit.

Deductions

You can’t use Direct File if you itemize deductions.

The Office of Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is hosting a webinar next Thursday, April 4th at 6:00 PM to demonstrate the IRS’s new Direct File tool– a pilot program that allows people with simple tax needs to electronically file federal tax returns for free, directly through the IRS.

The webinar will be followed by a short Q&A section. The office also has a resource page related to all things regarding tax responsibilities, which can be found here: https://ocasio-cortez.house.gov/services/tax-resources.

In January of 2019, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez was sworn-in as the youngest woman and youngest Latina ever to serve in Congress. Her first piece of legislation was the Green New Deal resolution, which envisions a 10-year national mobilization, akin to FDR’s New Deal, that would put millions to work in good-paying, union jobs repairing the nation’s infrastructure, reducing air and water pollution, and fighting the intertwined economic, social, racial and climate crises crippling the country.
