City, State, Federal emergency management and response officials and partners to speak at Family Emergency Preparedness Day in Staten Island organized by NYC Emergency Management
Editor’s note: Since the speakers mentioned that home fires are the number one actual disaster in terms of frequency and displacement, below are several links to helpful videos created by the FDNY that might help in case of a fire:
Why it’s important to close the door behind you in the event of a fire.
The dangers and hazards of overloading an extension cord or using an old or damaged cord
Finally, the importance of familiarizing yourself and your loved ones with a plan for escape in the event of a home fire is also critical for surviving such a disaster without injury.
The New York City Emergency Management Department kicked off National Preparedness Month with Family Emergency Preparedness Day at the Staten Island Children’s Museum. Officials including NYCEM Commissioner Zach Iscol and guests conducted a press conference during this event to remind New Yorkers how important it is to be prepared for emergencies.
In addition to gaining essential preparedness information from city agency partners and community partners, flood alarms will be available at this event. Entrance to the museum is free and attendees can look forward to engaging activities, including cape coloring with Ready Girl, where kids can get creative while learning about emergency preparedness, as well as a bounce house, face painting, and balloon artists to ensure a fun-filled day for all ages.
In attendance: Scheduled speakers included NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol, FEMA Deputy Regional Administrator Andrew D’Amora, an official from the NYS Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES), Doreen Thomann-Howe, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater New York, Dina Rosenthal, Executive Director of the Staten Island Childrens’ Museum, and Michelle Bascome, Director of Programs & Development at Nonprofit Staten Island and Staten Island COAD.
