Surrounded by friends and family, CWO Borders retires following 31 years of distinguished service in United States Army
Editor’s note: We previously covered the retirement of Sandy Ground Museum’s Executive Director, whose retirement day was declared Sylvia Moody D’Alessandro Day in her honor. Around the same time, Rep. AOC honored Rear Admiral, SUNY Maritime College President Michael A. Alfutis on his retirement.
Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella had the honor and privilege of hosting the retirement ceremony for Chief Warrant Officer 4 Adelaide S. Borders at Borough Hall last Thursday.
Chief Warrant Officer Borders, a native Staten Islander, served with honor and distinction in the United States Army for 31 years. Her tenure saw her in various posts across the country, including Kansas, Virginia and North Carolina, and as far away as South Korea.
During an emotional retirement ceremony, Chief Warrant Officer Borders was surrounded by a vast gathering of beaming family and friends as Borough President Fossella presented her with commendations and her official retirement certificate.
“It is the American soldier and other service members who have worn the uniform who are responsible for the freedoms we have today,” said Borough President Fossella. “And that’s what this lady has done for more than 30 years — taking pride in the uniform, what it represents, and what is emblematic of this country.”
Chief Warrant Officer Borders will be retiring out of the 20th Engineer Brigade, Fort Liberty, North Carolina, where she served in her final post as Senior Logistics Warrant Officer.
Many within the gathering – brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, best friends – offered words of love and appreciation for Chief Warrant Officer Borders as a family member to be relied on and someone who is dedicated to all her pursuits – personal and professional.
CWO Borders reciprocated this appreciation in tearful remarks.
“As I stand here before you today, I am filled with emotion as I retire from the United States Army after 31 years of dedicated service,” she said. “It has been an extraordinary journey, one that has shaped me in many ways that I could not have imagined. This moment is full circle.”
“We thank Chief Warrant Officer Borders for her long history of dedicated service to our nation and embodying what makes this nation great – sacrifice, courage, and selflessness,” Borough President Fossella said.
CWO Borders will be officially retired at the end of December.
