Editor’s note: For those not familiar with the Feast of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, according to the Franciscan Friars,
“The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe commemorates the Virgin Mary appearing to a peasant in 1531. This Catholic holiday, on Dec. 12, honors Mary, Mexico’s patron saint who is also referred as the Lady of the Americas. It’s a special day for Mexican Americans, too, because of their cultural and religious identity in this icon of Catholicism.
“The pilgrimage occurs all over the Americas and includes festivals and processions, as the faithful carry images and statues of the Lady of Guadalupe to begin 24 hours of prayer. In this post, you’ll learn more about the day that the miracle happened. You’ll also discover more about Our Lady of Guadalupe, namesake of the renewed Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe.”
According to Wikipedia, “Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe (Spanish: Virgen de Guadalupe), is a Catholic title of Mary, mother of Jesus associated with a series of four Marian apparitions to a Mexican peasant named Juan Diego and one to his uncle, Juan Bernardino, which are believed to have occurred in December 1531, when the Mexican territories were part of the Spanish Empire.
“A venerated image on a cloak (tilmahtli) associated with the apparition is enshrined in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Pope Leo XIII granted the image a decree of canonical coronation on February 8, 1887, and it was pontifically crowned on October 12, 1895. The basilica is the most-visited Catholic shrine in the world, and the world’s third most-visited sacred site.[2][3]”
Sacred Heart school will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with students participating in a 9:30 am Mass. Following the mass, at 10:30 am, the students will join in a procession to the grotto which will include a performance by the Ballet Guadalupano of Mount Carmel. The dancers, led by Emma Tapia, are well known in the neighborhood and this will be their first performance at Sacred Heart School. We are so honored to be part of the feast day celebration, and we are looking forward to sharing our culture with the students and faculty of Sacred Heart School.
With our emerging Hispanic population in our neighborhood and an increase in Hispanic students, we are very excited to celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe for our families, stated Ms. Catalano, principal of Sacred Heart School.
Sacred Heart School offers FREE PreK 3 and FREE UPK, and financial aid is available to students enter Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
