College Of Staten Island Nursing Program Graduates Attend Candle Lighting, Pinning Ceremony As They Step Out Onto Their Career Paths
Editor’s note: Staten Islander News covered last year’s commencement ceremony, where they graduated the most diverse class in their history. The Nursing Student Alliance was also formed last year to connect nurses with the local community. The nurses candle lighting and pinning ceremony is a heartwarming event with the nurses who have graduated and are ready to go out into the world and fulfill their dream of helping people in their community or in the larger NYC/NJ and sometimes national community achieve better health and receive the best possible healthcare. They light candles, receive their pins, and listen to speeches by their fellow students and the faculty of the school. Nurses are often overlooked, but they are usually the ones who are remembered the most by their patients. This might be because they see the patients more frequently than the doctors, or it more likely is because they tend to have a more kind and compassionate attitude and behavior than the rushed and sometimes frazzled doctor does.
They spend a lot of time with patients, and they are responsible for making sure that the individual understands what they are supposed to do after they return home, whether it is changing their dressings properly and timely, taking the medications that their doctor has prescribed, or scheduling the next visit, these are all conveyed by the nurses. Of course, not all nurses will be employed in hospitals, but wherever they are found, they are nearly always the anchor for the patient to their medical care.
From CSI: The College of Staten Island celebrated the confirmation of a new graduating class of nurses in a Pinning Ceremony held at the College’s Center for the Arts earlier this month. Check out photos from the ceremony, courtesy of Andrey Parkhomenko, and congratulations to our graduating class!
The following was said by President Timothy Lynch in his first message of 2025:
The highlight of my week, however, was found not on the other side of the planet but in our own Center for the Arts, where Tuesday saw the annual Candle Lighting and Pinning Ceremony for our Nursing AAS graduates, and in 1A where Thursday saw a New Student Engagement Fair (to be repeated with a New Student Orientation next Wednesday). At the former, nearly 60 students were recognized for their accomplishments and achievements, and we were fortunate to hear inspiring words from Chairperson Randelle Sasa, guest speaker Isa-Ngozi Shoneyin, and other honorees. At the latter, I was able to speak to many incoming first-year students and learn about why they chose to continue or resume their education at CSI. Seeing their enthusiasm and the excitement of our staff was a wonderful way to warm a bone-chillingly cold week!
