At Staten Island Rep’s Office, Citizen Action NY Rallies As Budget Cuts To Senior Programs, SNAP, Other Essential Services In Bill After Markup Released

Editor’s note: Regarding this issue, Citizen Action provided the following summary of the issues at stake in this debate:

The Republican Party, including Rep. Nicole Malliotakis who sits on the Ways and Means Committee, is pushing forward with devastating cuts to essential services—cuts that will destroy lives. They’re proposing around $1.5 trillion in cuts while handing out $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. These cuts feature the following:

Readers can learn more about this issue from the perspective of several New York politicians, including Senator Gillibrand and Senate minority leader Senator Schumer.

After the rally, Citizen Action released the following statement:

Citizen Action of New York Responds to House Committee Markups

(Albany, NY) – In response to the advancement of egregious proposals from the Ways and Means Committee and the Energy and Commerce Committee, Carolyn Martinez-Class and Rebecca Garrard, Interim Co-Executive Directors at Citizen Action of New York, released the following statement:

“Reps. Nicole Malliotakis and Claudia Tenney, and their Republican allies on the Ways and Means Committee just pushed a tax bill that hands trillions to the richest 1% while ripping resources from the rest of us. They’re slashing health benefits and nutrition assistance that working families rely on to bankroll tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. This is nothing more than a heartless attack on working New Yorkers, including their constituents.

“Meanwhile on the Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Nick Langworthy and House Republicans are scheming to gut billions from Medicaid and impose cruel work requirements. This isn’t about cutting ‘waste and fraud’ — it’s a direct assault on healthcare for seniors, families, and people with disabilities, all while lining the pockets of their billionaire friends. “New Yorkers deserve leaders who fight for us — not sellouts who rob working families to enrich the ultra-rich. We urge the entire New York delegation to reject these cruel proposals.”

Citizen Action of New York, Advocates To Rally Outside Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’ Office Demanding No Cuts to Healthcare

(New York, NY) – As Congressional Republicans push forward with a budget plan that would gut healthcare funding while handing tax breaks to billionaires, Citizen Action of New York, advocates and community members rallied outside Representative Nicole Malliotakis’ Staten Island office to protest against Republican attacks on healthcare.

Speakers highlight how Malliotakis, who sits on a key budget committee, is expected to back a plan that would strip critical healthcare resources from New Yorkers while allowing the ultra wealthy to avoid paying their fair share in taxes.

After the bill passed the House:

Statement From Citizen Action of New York on House Budget Vote

(Albany, NY) – In response to House Republicans passing President Trump’s Big Ugly Budget Bill, Carolyn Martinez-Class and Rebecca Garrard, Interim Co-Executive Directors at Citizen Action of New York, released the following statement:

“New York Republicans in the House, including Reps. Lawler and Malliotakis, voted to abandon millions of New Yorkers by backing a cruel, extremist Republican budget that guts healthcare, slashes food assistance, and shreds the basic supports our communities depend on—all to hand even more tax giveaways to billionaires and the ultra-wealthy. This budget is nothing short of economic violence on working class New Yorkers

“By voting to slash $880 billion from Medicaid, they are condemning millions to go without doctors, medicine, or even a hospital bed. By slashing $230 billion from SNAP, they are taking food off the tables of millions of people— including children, veterans, and low-income workers just trying to survive. These cuts are not about fiscal responsibility — they are about cruelty and robbing working people to reward the ultra-rich.

“These so-called representatives chose billionaires over babies, corporations over communities, and greed over human life. It’s been made crystal clear: they don’t work for us — they work for the ultra-wealthy — and Citizen Action of NY will make sure voters remember that at the ballot box in 2026.”
