Malliotakis Celebrates Passage of the Big Beautiful Bill

Legislation heads to President Trump’s desk delivering the largest middle-class tax cut in history, border security, a stronger military, and energy independence.

Editor’s note: Senator Gillibrand recently discussed the effects this budget bill will have on working families in her state and around the nation. Citizen Action spoke out against this bill and its predicted effects on Rep. Malliotakis‘ constituents.  And a local nonprofit talked about how this bill will affect Medicaid recipients, many of whom are elderly Americans with low income and multiple health conditions.

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis released the following statement after the final passage of the Big Beautiful Bill.

“Today is a historic day for Staten Islanders, Brooklynites, and families across the nation who have been calling for meaningful tax relief. Our Big Beautiful Bill puts America first by strengthening our borders and military, and delivering tax relief for American workers, middle-class families, and senior citizens. We’re not only making President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent, but also ensuring 88% of senior citizens will no longer pay federal taxes on their Social Security income, as well as quadrupling the SALT deduction, to benefit 98% of taxpayers in our district. The legislation also raises the standard deduction, eliminates taxes on tips for service workers, provides relief for small businesses, and expands the Child Tax Credit all to ensure hardworking Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.

We also save taxpayers $2 trillion by cutting waste and rooting out fraud and abuse throughout government. We fully protect the seniors, disabled, children, pregnant women, and those below the federal poverty level who rely on Medicaid, but take action to eliminate ineligible fraudsters and illegal immigrants from the rolls, and implement reasonable part time work requirements for able-bodied adults – all provisions supported by the vast majority of Americans.

We also strengthen our national security by investing in our military, funding border barriers, hiring more law enforcement, and revitalizing our domestic energy production.

Not passing this bill would have jeopardized all these America-First policies and led to a crushing $4 trillion tax increase on American families and businesses with New Yorkers seeing an average 22% tax hike.”

Highlights of the “Big, Beautiful Bill”

Increases SALT Deduction:

Quadruples the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction to $40,000 for individuals and families with income of less than $500,000.

Standard Deduction and Child Tax Credit

Makes permanent the increased Standard Deduction – $16,300 for individuals and $32,600 for married couples and increases the Child Tax Credit to $2,200 per child.
Both of these would have been cut in half if this did not pass.

Tax Relief for Seniors:

Modeled after Congresswoman Malliotakis’ legislation, H.R. 1130 Bonus Tax Relief for America’s Seniors Act, it provides a bonus deduction for seniors aged 65 and older—$6,000 for individuals with income up to $75,000 and $12,000 for married couples earning up to $150,000 eliminating their tax burden on Social Security benefits. The amount of the deductions decreases as income increases. As a result, 51 million seniors receiving Social Security (an estimated 88%) will pay no tax on those benefits.

Tax Relief for Working & Middle Class Families:

Fulfills President Trump’s commitment to eliminate taxes on some tips and overtime, stops the return of the Alternative Minimum Tax that crushed middle-income families, makes the 2017 income tax cuts permanent, and allows Americans to fully deduct auto loan interest on American-made vehicles.

The Big Beautiful Bill also makes adoption tax credits more accessible, expands 529 education savings accounts, supports scholarships and school choice. Malliotakis’ legislation to extend tax-free employer reimbursement for students and college graduates is also included.

Protecting & Strengthening Medicaid:

Safeguards New York’s most vulnerable Medicaid population by preserving the 50% federal reimbursement match, prevents illegal immigrants from receiving Medicaid benefits, cracks down on ineligible fraudsters, and implements part time work requirements for able bodied individuals. Fully protects seniors, disabled, children, pregnant women, and low income individuals below Federal Poverty Level who rely on Medicaid.

Keeps Our Borders Secure:

Provides funding for the detention and deportation of criminal illegal immigrants, hiring of 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, enforcement of the Remain in Mexico policy, and construction of new border barriers.

Revolutionizes Our National Security:

$12.5 billion to modernize our air traffic control system at Newark Airport and other facilities, funding for the Golden Dome to help protect our homeland, investments in American shipbuilding to strengthen our naval fleet, and upgrades to our military including Coast Guard to meet 21st-century threats.

Unleashes American Energy:

Increases and strengthens domestic energy production and security. Rescinds wasteful funds from Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act saving taxpayers billions of dollars.

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis was sworn in on January 3, 2021 to represent Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn. Prior to serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis was elected to the New York State Assembly on November 2, 2010, defeating a two-term incumbent. In the Assembly, she served as Minority Whip and the ranking minority member of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Employees. For five terms, Congresswoman Malliotakis fought to restore ethics in Albany, expand transit service in her district, improve programs for senior citizens, reform education and improve New York’s economic climate by reducing the tax burden on small businesses and residents. A cornerstone of her tenure was helping her community recover and rebuild following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In addition to advocating for these same issues in Washington, Congresswoman Malliotakis is acutely focused on securing New York’s fair share of federal mass transit funding, which would go towards expanding transportation services and easing traffic congestion, while also championing public safety by supporting our nation’s law enforcement officers. Congresswoman Malliotakis is the daughter of immigrants, her father from Greece and her mother a Cuban exile of the Castro dictatorship. She is currently the only Republican member representing New York City in Congress, representing a district spanning the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island. She is a passionate advocate for animal rights and the strengthening of animal cruelty laws, and in her spare time, enjoys spending time with her chihuahua, Peanut.
