NYC Mayoral Candidate Curtis Sliwa Leads Search For Dog Abuser, Rescues Cats Trapped In Abandoned NYCHA Daycare

Editor’s note: If you’re interested in animal rights issues and want to hear Curtis Sliwa talk about them with his wife, you can check out Curtis and Nancy Sliwa’s Animal Welfare hour, a podcast show spotlighting animal rights and abuse issues in the modern landscape of New York City.  The latest offering describes how vacant storefronts can be transformed into animal adoption centers, as well as a discussion on carriage horse abuse that still occurs.

On August 3rd, 1 PM – 3 PM, 2953 Avenue X, Brooklyn – Curtis and Nancy Sliwa will join cat rescuers at a vacant daycare center on NYCHA grounds to save cats trapped underground. Despite initial NYCHA claims of no cats, residents confirmed their presence, with five already rescued. The Sliwas, active with citywide cat rescue groups, support this effort, with Curtis running for NYC Mayor on the historic Protect Animals line in November.

Nancy and Curtis visited supporters on Coyle Street on Saturday to thank everyone rallying for our campaign.

This community has been out here for over a year, standing up against Adams and the shelter forced next to homes, schools, and small businesses.

“All my opponents support the ‘City of Yes,'” Curtis said. “I’m the only candidate who will protect your neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for you and your families.”

“No one will silence working New Yorkers,” Curtis continued. “We won’t stop until I’m Mayor and Nancy is First Lady.”

Nancy and Curtis visited Sheepshead Bay and Nostrand Houses on Sunday to address a feral cat colony trapped in a shuttered daycare. For nearly ten days, these cats were left with little food or water while NYCHA denied their presence.

The Sliwas met Olga Hudyno of Midwood Cats, who’s tirelessly working to trap and rehome them, despite NYCHA’s warning signs against helping the cats.

Feral cat caretakers are unsung heroes, funding spay, vaccination, and feeding efforts themselves. As Mayor, Curtis will ensure they get the resources and support they deserve. NYC must be a partner, not an obstacle.

Dog Abuse Suspect

South Ozone Park Community Joins Effort to Seek Justice for Animal Cruelty

‘The People’s Mayor’

Monday, July 28, 2025 at 1:00 PM at 128th Street & 116th Avenue, South Ozone Park, Queens

NYC Mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, running on the first-ever “Protect Animals” Independent line and as the Republican candidate for Mayor, will join South Ozone Park residents to distribute wanted fliers featuring a suspect who set a dog on fire.

The Protect Animals line demands jail time for animal abusers and prioritizes their capture and prosecution.

Currently, New York City treats animals as property, often releasing culprits without consequences.

Sliwa said, “As Mayor, I’ll establish an Animal Welfare Services bureau in City Hall’s basement to ensure the NYPD and prosecutors pursue maximum charges for animal cruelty.”
