This fall, director Miles Sternfeld (Next to Normal, Sweeney Todd) and his newly founded Sternfeld Studio will invite audiences deep into the forest for a bold reimagining of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s INTO THE WOODS — staged not in a theatre, but under the stars.
Presented as an intimate, site-specific pilgrimage, the production transforms Staten Island’s secluded 140-acre Camp Pouch into a living fairytale. Each performance accommodates just 25 audience members, offering nine nights of a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The journey begins around a campfire before audiences set out, lantern in hand, through wooded trails where the story awakens around them. Costumes and design draw from contemporary hikers, survivalists, and reclaimed natural materials, weaving Sondheim’s world into the textures of the real forest.
“This is not your typical Into the Woods,” says Sternfeld. “It’s a spiritual, communal journey into the heart of the fairy tale — a mythic, acoustic, firelit fever dream set in the very woods the characters sing about.”
With special permission, the production debuts new acoustic orchestration arranged by Lena Gabrielle (SIX the Musical Tour) for guitar, bass, violin, melodica, accordion and hand percussion. Musicians double as narrators, guiding the audience and reimagining Sondheim’s score.
The production features a lineup of Broadway talent, led by Afra Hines* (Hadestown, The Who’s Tommy) as The Witch, Matt Dengler** (A Little Night Music) as The Baker, Hannah Elless* (Bright Star) as The Baker’s Wife, Joy Del Valle* (West Side Story) as Cinderella, and Jordan Matthew Brown* (The Book of Mormon) as Jack. The cast also includes Anna Kirkland as Jack’s Mother, Nova Gomez as Little Red, Wayne J. Miller* as The Mysterious Man, Bela Quines* as Rapunzel, Miciah Wallace as Rapunzel’s Prince, Sam Stickels as Cinderella’s Prince, Izaya Perrier as Narrator, Benjamin Taylor Brown* as Narrator, Christian Leigh as Narrator, and Renee Shohet as Standby. This production is an Equity Approved Showcase.
Lead Produced by Sternfeld Studios and Marina Montesanti (Fat Ham, A Beautiful Noise), the creative team also includes Music Supervisor/Orchestrator Lena Gabrielle (Six tour) with Assistant Music Director Ryan John, Scenic and Costume Designer Josh Oberlander, Lighting Designer Nicholas Pollock, Production Manager Jen Sandler, Production Stage Manager Fuyuan Zheng, and Stage Manager Winnie Chiang, with associate producers Justin Silver, Jennifer Sklias-Gahan, Diane Davis.
As dusk falls, the fairy tale unfolds in real time — with the audience moving alongside the actors, immersed in the magic of the natural world. Each night promises a personal encounter with one of Sondheim’s most beloved works. With such an esteemed group of creatives on board, Into the Woods is a theatrical event of the highest caliber.
