Deadpool’s Staten Island Connection

Did you know that in Marvel Comics, everyone’s favorite Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, once ruled Staten Island? That’s right, Deadpool was the King of Staten Island before Pete Davidson.

It all started back in the seventeenth century when an agreement was made between the humans and monsters, granting Monsters ownership of Staten Island, yeah Monsters ruled Staten Island in Marvel Comics.

These terms lasted until the Twenty First Century when the then-current Monster King was assassinated by Deadpool, who was hired by a man named Blaylock who hoped that the Monster King’s death would drive all monsters away from Staten Island. What he did not know was that by Monster Law, he who kills the Monster King in turn becomes the Monster King. So Deadpool was declared Monster King because of the successful assassination.

Of course, being Monster King also granted Deadpool rule over Staten Island. He used this newfound power to rename Staten Island, Monster Island.

Monster Island became a haven for Monsters as it had in the past. That is, until during an Alien invasion Spider-man saved a ferry full of humans and requested asylum for them on Monster Island. Deadpool agreed to help his friend. Deadpool even extended his aid by leading a Monster Army against the aliens.

Shortly after fending off the alien invasion, Deadpool gave up the throne to resume his career as part time hero, part time assassin, full time comedian. As a result, ownership of Staten Island reverted to humans, thank goodness. Who knew that Staten Island was once ruled by Monsters?

Ever wonder if there are any comic books strictly focused on Staten Island and us residents? Well, wonder no more. The Eltingville Club, written by Staten Islander Evan Dorkin, is about a group of four teenage boys who live in Eltingville. The boys are interested in geek culture and have a shared interest in comic books and science fiction.

The series won many Eisner Awards (Comic Books equivalent to the Oscars) over the years and has been praised throughout the comic industry. You can pick up copies of the series at JHU Comics, Staten Island’s last remaining comic fan refuge.
