Bronx Is the New York Renting Spot to Watch Ahead of the 2026 Moving Season, Other NY Areas See Renter Interest Shift
Editor’s note: While the Bronx, among the five boroughs, ranks highest, there are no areas of New York that are in the top ten nationwide with regards to renter interest, whereas places like Cincinnati and Minneapolis are attracting more renters. Interesting to note also is that Staten Island is not on the top 100 list of in-demand places that apartment hunters are moving to. Considering the proportion of owners to renters on the island, this is not surprising. Staten Island is alone among the five boroughs in that it is majority owner, at 60%, rather than majority tenant, as in other boroughs of the city.
Renter interest across New York is shifting ahead of the 2026 rental season — and the momentum varies depending on which market you look at. The Bronx is leading the state in renter interest year-over-year, while other areas are seeing more mixed engagement patterns.
The Renter Engagement Tracker (REnT) examines renter activity across the 150 largest U.S. cities based on millions of apartment searches on RentCafe.com, offering an early look at where interest is building before peak rental season.
- The Bronx ranks #40 nationwide after jumping an impressive 107 positions year-over-year, placing it just 10 spots shy of the top 30. Listings added to favorites surged 222%, and saved searches increased 31%. That combination suggests renters are actively shortlisting and tracking properties, signaling stronger engagement compared to last year.
- Yonkers ranks #61 nationally after dropping 19 positions. While page views declined 15%, saved searches jumped 200%, indicating renters may be monitoring specific listings more closely rather than broadly browsing the market.
- Queens climbed 45 positions to rank #93. Apartment hunters added 15% more listings to their favorites, while page views dipped slightly (-2%) and saved searches declined 13%. The mixed movement suggests steady but more selective engagement compared to last year.
The takeaway: The Bronx is clearly gaining momentum, while other markets across New York state are showing more targeted or measured renter activity as the 2026 moving season approaches.

Cincinnati is most sought-after city by renters in early 2026, followed by Atlanta and Minneapolis
1. Cincinnati, OH
Renter enthusiasm in Cincinnati continues to climb in 2026, with more people actively searching for apartments and saving listings that match their preferences. As a result, the city has claimed the #1 spot on our list, signaling its status as the most popular destination for renters at the start of the year after jumping 10 positions since last year.
- Page views increased by 3%.
- Listings added to favorites grew by 81%.
- Saved searches jumped by 14%.
This demand is largely driven by renters relocating from high-cost, coastal metros in search of a mid-sized city with a robust job market anchored by health care, manufacturing and finance. At the same time, the revitalization of various downtown neighborhoods, as well as the riverfront, has made urban living in Cincinnati significantly more appealing than it was just one year ago.
Renters showing the most interest in Cincinnati were mostly based in Columbus, OH, with notable engagement also coming from Chicago and New York City.
2. Atlanta, GA
Atlanta’s rental market remains steady, with renters showing sustained interest through frequent searches and repeated visits to listings. Even as inventory tightens, engagement levels suggest that people remain determined to find a place in the city. Consequently, these patterns have nudged Atlanta up one spot from last year, keeping it a Southern powerhouse.
- The city ranks sixth for total page views.
- Saved searches remain as high as last year, inching up 1%.
- Atlanta ranks second for total listings added to favorites.
Atlanta’s appeal is reinforced by its expanding job base in tech, logistics and film. Ongoing investments in intown neighborhoods have made the city especially desirable for younger professionals who value walkability and urban comfort.
The bulk of Atlanta’s renter traffic stemmed from urban hubs like New York City, as well as fellow Georgia cities Marietta and Sandy Springs.
3. Minneapolis, MN
Renters in Minneapolis are becoming more intentional in their searches, by spending less time browsing and more time narrowing their choices. That evolving behavior has lifted the city four places in the national ranking compared to last year.
- Minneapolis ranks ninth for total page views.
- Listings added to favorites grew by 29%.
- The city ranks fifth for total saved searches.
In this case, the city’s diverse economy — anchored by health care, major corporate headquarters and top-tier universities — provides a steady stream of students and early-career workers looking to get ahead of the rental season.
