Editor’s note: Readers may remember our other stories by Nick Christophers, about several musical artists, film makers, and other creatives who are related to or located in New York City.
The typical storyline when it comes to musicians and how they developed a desire to pursue music is usually through family or via being inspired by an artist they heard. But when it comes to Michael Gilas, it was by a riding accident. That accident triggered a musical light bulb in Michael that would pave the way for him to shower others with his sudden gift. His music is meant to evoke spiritual hope, and a desire never to give up.
Michael was influenced by such legends as The Eagles, Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac. A Long Island, New York native who now resides in San Diego, California, he has never let go of where he came from where his musical journey took root. After his accident in 2021, which left him bed-ridden, music became his outlet and soon developed into a strong desire to pursue it. In 2024 he took off running with a determination to fulfill the blessing he received to create great music. By 2025 he was already breaking ground on music charts.
“I have drawn inspiration from artists who prioritize honesty and emotional depth in their work. I was especially influenced by musicians who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable and tell the truth through their songwriting, a quality he strives to embody in his own music.”
This became evident when one of his releases “Working with the Rain” charted at #13 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. In June of 2025 his other release “Can’t Hide Beautiful” sat at #37 on the AC chart and reached #23 on Mediabase. Then the track “You and Me and Miami” made it on the Hot A/C chart at #28 and was ranked #3 as a Mediabase Hot A/C Independent Artist.
“Seeing “Working With the Rain” and “Can’t Hide Beautiful” resonate on a national level was a defining moment for me. The most meaningful part is knowing the songs reached people in a real way.”
Presently, he has dropped a new single titled “SIGMUND FREUD GIRLFRIENDS” which was written by Michael Gilas, Bill DILuigi, and Allan Phillips. The project was produced by Grammy-winning producer Brian Kennedy, along with Michael Gilas, Allan Phillips, and Stephen Wrench. The single has an unmistakable touch on current society and how we deal with social media is witty and soulful and full of an honest message.
In 2026, Michael is focused on expanding his reach through new music and live performances. His upcoming show at The Cutting Room marks an important milestone, where he will share the stage with acclaimed artist Brian Kennedy who has collaborated with such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake. Kennedy is well experienced when it comes to onstage performances, which will only add to the evening’s event. With continued releases and a growing audience, Michael remains committed to creating music that connects on a meaningful level.
