Free Comic Book Day Draws Crowds to Staten Island Shop

By Chad Farley

Last Saturday, comic book fans across Staten Island joined thousands nationwide in celebrating Free Comic Book Day, an annual event that brings readers into local shops for complimentary titles and special promotions.

At JHU Comic Books on New Dorp Lane, hundreds of attendees lined up early to take part in the festivities. The store, operated by owners Nick and Ron, hosted a full day of activities including creator signings, discounted merchandise, and giveaways, creating a lively atmosphere for families, collectors, and first-time visitors alike.

Publishers such as Marvel Comics and DC Comics, along with independent companies like Image Comics and Dynamite Entertainment, distributed a variety of free titles aimed at introducing readers to new and ongoing series. This year’s selections included several high-profile releases, along with a title based on The Greatest American Hero television series from the 1980s. This new titles drew particular interest from longtime fans.

The event also served as a platform for local media and creators. Collectors Confession was on-site to record a live episode, capturing the large turnout and giving viewers a look at the range of comics available throughout the day.

Since its launch in 2002 which coincided with the release of the first Spider-Man movie, Free Comic Book Day has grown from a small promotion into a widely recognized celebration of comic book culture. Today, it plays an important role in supporting independent retailers and fostering community engagement, with many shops hosting cosplay contests, signings, and family-friendly activities.

For Staten Island residents, the strong turnout at JHU Comic Books highlighted the continued popularity of the event and its role in bringing the local community together. Next year’s Free Comic Book Day is scheduled for May 1.
