Editor’s note: The borough president has been very vocal about the issue below involving homeless shelters proposed or in production on Staten Island. We have covered several related issues in the past, including the number of kids in the public school system who lack stable housing. Additionally, there are unhoused individuals that do live on the street in our borough, albeit a lot fewer than in other boroughs, at somewhere around 200. However, they still need care and assistance, and the island has only one or possibly two emergency shelter locations, where people can stay for a day or two at most. There are no Section 8 houses available on the island at this time, either, though that may also change.
A Statement from Borough President Vito Fossella on Potential Homeless Shelter in Port Richmond
Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella issued the following statement regarding the potential transient hotel homeless shelter at 109 Port Richmond Avenue:
“The madness continues. To our understanding, it seems that there is a $40 million, 64-unit adult-family homeless shelter in the works that would be located within a recently built hotel on Port Richmond Avenue.
Once again, the City failed to notify us of this proposal. It follows a very disturbing and troubling trend in which the City treats Staten Island as a second-class citizen, and rules by decree without the consent of the governed.
Port Richmond is a growing community that has long been trending in a positive direction. This is a strike to the heart.
Combine this with the other proposals on Father Capodanno Boulevard and on Arthur Kill Road, and the cumulative costs exceed $100 million. Is this money well spent?
The residents of Port Richmond deserve to be put first. We are exploring all our options and will do all we can to stop this shelter.”
