Pave Staten Island: BP Fossella to Announce Funding Allocation to Help DOT Pave More Roads

Editor’s note: Staten Island received quite a few pothole repairs, where existing potholes were reported by residents and the DOT made several passes to get them repaired over the course of multiple weeks since February. Watch the announcement by the borough president here.

Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella announced a funding allocation his office has made to the Department of Transportation to help restore Staten Island’s roadways at a press conference at the intersection of Stanwich Street and Rome Avenue on Tuesday, July 21st at 10:30 AM.

This year, Staten Island’s roads were hit hard by the inclement weather. Between two major snowstorms in the winter that deposited record snowfall on the asphalt, and several bouts of heavy rain in the late spring and summer, much of the Borough’s streets remain worse for wear.

The Department of Transportation has worked every week to mill and re-pave roads across the Island. However, DOT is limited by the number of “lane miles” it is allotted by the City budget. In March, the Borough President issued a call for Staten Island to receive more lane miles, but for one reason or another, those numbers remain low.

At the press conference, the Borough President announced a major funding allocation, which will help give the DOT the resources it needs to finish paving Staten Island, and to restore our roadways to a better, more driveable condition.

The Office of the Borough President has a responsibility to advocate for the entire Borough of Staten Island and all its residents, and represents the Borough's interests within City government. The Borough President communicates directly with the Mayor and the City Council to emphasize Staten Island’s budget priorities. In addition, the Borough President is responsible for reviewing major land use decisions and proposing sites for city facilities within the Borough. As the chair of the Borough Board, the Borough President leads Staten Island’s City Council delegation and Community Board chairs in the process of reviewing and approving the transfer of public properties to private use. The Borough President’s Office houses the Borough's Topographical Bureau, which maintains the borough’s official maps and assigns street addresses. The Borough President monitors the delivery of city services on Staten Island, and acts as a liaison between residents and city agencies when problems arise to devise solutions. The Borough President is also responsible for appointing one member to the Panel for Educational Policy and one member to the City Planning Commission, as well as some 150 members to Staten Island’s three community boards.
