Malliotakis Announces $1 Million in Federal Funding for Security Upgrades at NYCHA’s Berry Houses

Editor’s note: Staten Islander previously covered issues being experienced by residents of the Park Hill Houses and Fox Hill Houses
complexes, also on Staten Island.  These are private Section 8-eligible apartments for New York City residents, but they are not NYCHA (NYC Housing Authority) managed.  In the past, Assemblymember Fall used his office’s discretionary funding to obtain high-quality, safe electric skillets for local residents in the NYCHA Housing complex whose gas had not been on for some time.

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) — Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) joined residents and community leaders at the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Berry Houses to announce $1,000,000 in federal funding for CCTV security upgrades throughout the development.

The funding, which is part of the Fiscal Year 2026 federal appropriations process, will support the installation of CCTV cameras at Berry Houses, including cameras in building lobbies, on building exteriors and inside elevators. The project may also address older infrastructure, replace aging security equipment and make necessary electrical upgrades to support the CCTV system.

These security cameras will provide greater security and serve as a potential crime deterrent for residents. The upgraded system will also provide an important public safety tool for residents, property management, the development’s childcare and community centers, and local law enforcement.

“I am pleased to announce this critical federal funding for NYCHA’s Berry Houses,” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. “Residents deserve to feel safe in their homes and neighborhood, and these security upgrades will help deter crime, provide greater peace of mind and better protect the families who live here. This funding will improve public safety and quality of life throughout the development while giving residents, property management and local law enforcement additional tools to help keep Berry Houses safe and secure.”

“NYCHA residents deserve to feel safe in their homes, in their buildings, and on their campuses, and investments like this one help us strengthen public safety,” said NYCHA Chief Executive Officer Lisa Bova-Hiatt. “This funding will allow NYCHA to upgrade and modernize the CCTV system at Berry Houses, providing residents with greater peace of mind knowing that their homes and community are equipped with an important tool to deter crime, while also giving property management and law enforcement a vital resource to support the safety of the development. We thank Congresswoman Malliotakis for her continued partnership and commitment to bringing critical resources to NYCHA communities.”

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis was sworn in on January 3, 2021 to represent Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn. Prior to serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis was elected to the New York State Assembly on November 2, 2010, defeating a two-term incumbent. In the Assembly, she served as Minority Whip and the ranking minority member of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Employees. For five terms, Congresswoman Malliotakis fought to restore ethics in Albany, expand transit service in her district, improve programs for senior citizens, reform education and improve New York’s economic climate by reducing the tax burden on small businesses and residents. A cornerstone of her tenure was helping her community recover and rebuild following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In addition to advocating for these same issues in Washington, Congresswoman Malliotakis is acutely focused on securing New York’s fair share of federal mass transit funding, which would go towards expanding transportation services and easing traffic congestion, while also championing public safety by supporting our nation’s law enforcement officers. Congresswoman Malliotakis is the daughter of immigrants, her father from Greece and her mother a Cuban exile of the Castro dictatorship. She is currently the only Republican member representing New York City in Congress, representing a district spanning the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island. She is a passionate advocate for animal rights and the strengthening of animal cruelty laws, and in her spare time, enjoys spending time with her chihuahua, Peanut.
