OPINION: App Store Accountability Act Can Create Federal Guidelines For Age Verification, Parental Permissions Applicable Across Platforms

Share

Parents across the country are asking the same question: how can we keep our children safe online when the digital landscape changes every day?

From social media platforms to gaming apps and messaging services, young people are navigating an increasingly complex online environment. Parents often find themselves juggling different privacy settings, parental controls, and age requirements across dozens of platforms.

The App Store Accountability Act would help achieve those goals by establishing age verification and parental permission processes through app stores. Instead of forcing parents to navigate different rules for every app their child downloads, the legislation would create a centralized framework that applies across platforms.

This federal approach is particularly important because families do not live their lives according to state boundaries. Children use the same devices and apps whether they are at home, traveling, or visiting relatives in another state. Parents deserve consistent protections no matter where they live.

Current age restrictions are often undermined by self-reported information, allowing children to bypass safeguards with little effort. Establishing verification at the app store level would create clearer standards and stronger enforcement while still allowing teens to gain greater independence as they mature.

The App Store Accountability Act represents a practical, bipartisan opportunity to strengthen online safety for young people and give parents the tools they need in the digital age.
