Without Blood Starring Salma Hayek Pinault and directed by Angelina Jolie is a beautifully done masterpiece. Its emotional charge starts from the first moment and carries through to the end.
The film’s intense beginning is at the home of an older man who knows his killers are on the way. He tries to hide his two children so they’ll survive, but only his young daughter makes it out alive. From that beginning moment, the viewer is transported decades into the future, where the girl is now a grown up.
It’s then that we learn about her incredibly difficult life, which was continually touched by the tragedy that shaped her childhood. We learn of her marriage to a count which wasn’t intended to be. He was there to take care of the person who was witness to the murders she had seen. We learn of the betrayals by her own children and the count’s family. Of her resilience and her life past that moment of betrayal, though, it’s not really expanded on.
Somehow, after escaping from her captors, she made her way through the world to arrive at the moment we meet her again. Her resilience is strong, and she carved out a life for herself that we don’t really learn much about.
In conversation with the man who participated in her father’s murder, we learn about her difficult life and how much of a part this event played in every moment of her existence. For instance, the count marrying her wasn’t supposed to happen. He had agreed to do something else but didn’t.
This film is definitely a work of art. In the sense that everything is beautiful in a sad kind of way. There is an intensity that runs through every moment, and it has a very genuine feel. When the girl is having a conversation with the man who believes she is going to kill him like a black widow spider because she was crazy, there is a persistent thread of elegance running through.
From the cigarette to the compact mirror to the purse and everything in between…it’s a quiet sort of elegance, the kind you feel in the presence of a beautiful woman who knows who she is. She knows what she wants and she has survived multiple tragedies the likes of which most of us can’t imagine. But she has held onto her soul through all of it.
This movie is highly recommended. If you’re the type of person who can appreciate art and doesn’t mind that not every loose end is tied up tight and every possible back story explored… this is for you. It’s an incredible work of art, set against the backdrop of a deadly and, in the end, pointless war that the rebels won. Those who would do anything for the promise of a better life…. Which never really materialized.
Kind of like in Romania and Moldova, how there were massive uprisings and the government-controlling oligarchs were ‘removed’ and replaced, but nothing changed.
Humans seem incapable of understanding that their flaws become an infection in everything they do. That their noble ideas and values can easily rot from inside out, especially when large numbers of people or whole societies are involved. Humans are and always be both good and evil, often within the same person. Accepting that means that every political system and every social structure is vulnerable to corruption, and ideals go by the wayside when money or power are involved.
This movie was really memorable and deeply moving. It was beautifully shot and superbly acted. Highly recommended as a must-see movie, and I would give it five stars.
