NEW YORK CARES SPREADS WARMTH DURING 37th ANNUAL COAT DRIVE WITH COAT DISTRIBUTION FOR STATEN ISLANDERS
The New York Cares coat distribution and Medicaid assistance will support children, families and individuals in need in Staten Island.
Editor’s note: Last year’s coat distribution happened a bit earlier in the season, but these coats will help many survive this thus far brutal winter with warmth and dignity. For those who remember, New York Cares ad often featured the Statue Of Liberty shivering in the cold as a homeless New Yorker:
New York Cares, in partnership with Staten Island Social Care Network and H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths, will host a coat distribution and Medicaid screening event for the 37th Annual Coat Drive, where volunteers will distribute over 400 warm winter coats and provide free Medicaid screenings to Staten Islanders in need on Tuesday, January 27, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 120 Victory Blvd. in Staten Island.
During the event, children, families and individuals will pick out and try-on warm winter coats donated by generous fellow New Yorkers. Volunteers will also be onsite to provide free screenings for housing, food and other services available with Medicaid and assistance with Medicaid registration.
New York Cares aims to provide tens of thousands of coats to New Yorkers in need and raise thousands to distribute brand new winter coats and fund essential programs that help break the cycle of poverty. Through the Coats+ fundraising campaign New Yorkers can donate gently used, freshly laundered coats at several public collection sites in each of the five boroughs, set up a coat collection site or donate to the Coats+ fundraiser.
The inaugural New York Cares Coat Drive was held in 1989 as the city’s first centralized initiative to collect and distribute warm winter coats across the five boroughs. It has since helped more than 2.5 million New Yorkers find warmth. Last year alone, New York Cares coordinated and set up 654 collection sites, collected and distributed nearly 50,000 coats, and served more than 148 schools and non-profit organizations.
