ADVISORY: ASSOCIATION FOR A BETTER NEW YORK TO HOST PANEL DISCUSSION ON REIMAGINING NEW YORK CITY’S NONPROFIT CONTRACTS AS PART OF ABNYTALKS SERIES
See below for video of the panel discussion that was held recently, primarily focused on payment of non-profits by City agencies in a timely fashion – which is not currently happening. Four months to get paid is super fast, as many providers wait closer to a year or more for payment of their services. This causes many of them to, by necessity, use lines of credit provided by commercial lenders, with high interest rates, in order to maintain their business while waiting for payment. These interest rates can sometimes cost as high as $80,000 a year for some organizations. And that is just interest! Mayor Mamdani has als publicy committed to making non-profit payments for local charities happen more quickly than they have in the past. And Mayor Adams had made a dent in the non-profit payment backlog during his tenure.
Reagarding the World Cup For All Community Grant Program, which we announced a couple of months ago when the application period was open: three Staten Island organizations received up to $15,000 for World Cup fan engagement activations through the ABNY World Cup for All Community Grant Program. You can see information on those awards, including what Staten Island’s organizations intend to use them for, here.
NEW YORK, NY – The Association for a Better New York (ABNY) will host a panel discussion on reimagining New York City’s nonprofit contracting system on Tuesday, April 14 as part of its ABNYTalks series.
The event opened with remarks from Dr. Helen Arteaga Landaverde, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, followed by a panel discussion with Michael Sedillo, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Nonprofit Services; Charlette Hamamgian, Deputy Comptroller for Contract Administration at the New York City Comptroller’s Office; Michelle Jackson, Executive Director of the Human Services Council of New York; and Lincoln Restler, New York City Council Member and Chair of the Contracts Committee. This panel conversation will be moderated by ABNY CEO Emma Pfohman.
The City of New York contracts nearly $20 billion in human services each year, with the vast majority delivered by nonprofit providers across the five boroughs. Nonprofits manage our homeless shelters, 3-K and Pre-K programs, senior centers, immigration legal assistance, job training programs, food pantries, and more. Yet many nonprofits face bureaucratic hurdles and chronic delays in contract payments.
Improving the efficiency, reliability, and transparency of the contracting and payment process is critical to ensuring these partners can deliver high-quality services to New Yorkers.
Key government and nonprofit leaders will weigh in on how to reimagine the City’s contracting system, reduce administrative burdens, and better support these critical organizations.
