Bus Company and Public Officials: Bayonne’s Broadway Bus Is Alive and Well

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, City Council President Gary LaPelusa, Assemblyman Will Sampson, and Broadway Bus President Emil Massa confirmed that Bayonne’s Broadway Bus is alive and well.

Mayor Davis said, “Various false rumors have appeared online about the status of Bayonne’s Broadway Bus.

“Some people have been posting incorrectly on the Internet that the Broadway Bus is going out of business. All of those claims are false.”

Mayor Davis continued, “Apparently, the closing of the A and C Bus lines in Jersey City has misled some people into thinking that the Broadway Bus is owned by A and C.  It is not so. They are separate companies.  Some people are adding two plus two and getting twenty-seven.  They should get their facts straight.”

City Council President and Third Ward Council Member Gary LaPelusa said, “The Broadway Bus is a vitally important part of our local transportation services.

The Broadway Bus helps get people to our Broadway shopping district, to work, and to school. I am very happy that the Broadway Bus continues to serve Bayonne and is doing well.”

State Assemblyman Will Sampson (31st Legislative District-Bayonne and Jersey City) said, “The continuing health of local bus lines is vitally important to Bayonne, which has a long tradition of bus service on Broadway, Avenue C, and Kennedy Boulevard.  I am happy to confirm that the Broadway Bus will continue to operate for the benefit of our residents. In Trenton, I will continue to support local transit.”

Emil Massa, President of Broadway Bus, said, “I was very disturbed to learn that people have been posting false information about the Broadway Bus.

“All they had to do was to ask me about our business.  I am proud to say that we continue to provide local bus service to the residents of Bayonne.  We look forward to continuing to serve our community now and in the future.”

What about restoring the Red & tan Lines #55 bus to Port Richmond?

And the one to the Mall as well?

    Seriously….

    • These bus routes did at one time exist.

They were run by the Red & Tan Lines, and the #55 bus went as far south as Port Richmond Avenue, following the route of the old Richmond Avenue, thereby passing both Brother’s Pizza and the old site of Brother’s down the street, finally turning right and heading back over the Bayonne Bridge.

South Hudson Boulevard was a unique combination of an independent bus owners association (now Route 10) and a separate bus company. Boulevard Transit Lines dated back to the 1930s and was owned by the Drogin family until they went out of business in the 1990s. Boulevard Transit operated the 55 line between Staten Island (Port Richmond) and the Port Authority Terminal via South Hudson Boulevard and then the Holland Tunnel.

Drogin was a large participant in the South Hudson County Boulevard Independent Bus Owners Assoiciation and eventually owned nearly all of the buses on its route, which became today’s #10 Bayonne-Journal Sqaure.

Drogin purchased the 99 and 99S from the pre-Coach USA Red and Tan Lines in the 1980s. They also started the 144 line and I believe the 122 line between Staten Island and Jersey City.

It all ended suddenly in, I believe, the late 1990s or early in 2000-2001 when Drogin suddenly went out of business and Coach USA/Red and Tan took over. The rest has been a long decline under Coach USA. ”

“Someone is still running a 55 variant according to the NYMTC data. There is a bus running through the Holland Tunnel to the PABT that averages 20 passengers in each direction. According to a 144 old timer, the 55 used to run 1-2 trips per day. “

It would be great to see this bus run once again!
