Readers may remember our coverage of the fentanyl crisis on Staten Island, where with Assemblymember Pirozzolo’s leadership and pressure, the City and State disbursed some of the opioid settlement funds to Staten Island, which has been the hardest hit.  According to the local hospital system, at NYC H+H, their new hotspotting program, where they maintain contact with those suffering from substance use disorder, along with housing and other essential needs which can be met via the healthcare system.  They attribute much of the drop in substance use and addiction, along with fentanyl death reductions, to this program.

Here is a quote from Rep. Malliotakis about the roundtable, “The lax laws in New York State that have allowed drug dealers and traffickers to be released repeatedly to continue preying on our citizens must be fixed. Despite inaction by Governor Hochul at the state level, President Trump and Congress have secured our borders, deported traffickers, designated cartels as terrorist organizations, and passed legislation to give the DOJ better tools to prosecute traffickers. As a result, we saw a 24% drop in fentanyl deaths last year.”

A statement about the event from NY AG Candidate Saritha Komatireddy:

“Last week, I spoke directly with New York families who have experienced the pain of losing loved ones to fentanyl. Their courage and determination to prevent other families from suffering the same tragedy is admirable. These families have been demanding accountability and justice. As Chief of Staff of the DEA, I worked to end the fentanyl crisis, and I will continue that work as New York Attorney General, and ensure that victims and their families always have a seat at the table.”

Thursday, October 15, New York Attorney General candidate Saritha Komatireddy joined bereaved New York families for a fentanyl roundtable on Staten Island, where parents and siblings will share their stories of losing loved ones to the deadly drug.

The roundtable will take place at the home of Michael DiTomasso, New York Director of Fentanyl Fathers and Angel Army, where he discovered his only brother, Joseph Carmine DiTomasso, dead from fentanyl three years ago.

The event comes just one day after the third anniversary of Joseph’s death and will feature families advocating for greater accountability for fentanyl deaths and stronger fentanyl education in New York schools.
