Loud Sound Over Staten Island: Military Jets, Tornado, Or…Other?
On Monday, January 4, 2021 two Staten Islander News staffers were hiking in the Greenbelt when they heard a rumbling in the sky.
At first, the staffers believed that the sound was from a flyover of military jets. But then the mysterious sound kept getting louder and louder until it was deafening.
There were black clouds overhead. Was this a a tornado? Staten Island is actually a real “tornado alley,” and we’ve had numerous twisters in years past. One of the staffers said it sounded a lot like the skies had on the night of Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Other possible scenarios considered included a tsunami headed toward the coast. You can hear the staffers wondering if it was a good idea to get back to their car.
As of now, it’s still not known what caused the sound. It lasted a few minutes, and staffers managed to get the last minute or so recorded, as it was diminishing in volume.

I’ve seen flyovers by military jets. If the authors are accurate and this was going on for minutes prior to hitting RECORD, I’m guessing this was a tornado. Jets approach and the sound grows in intensity and dissipates as they leave.
UFO? Nah, those sound like a metal top spinning really fast. You don’t believe we’re the top of the food chain, do you?

No way a passenger jet. Are you serious? We have jets flying over SI daily. This was almost certainly a military jet or something else.
My vote is fighter plane.

No F**KING WAY! I”VE LIVED ON STATEN ISL SINCE 1967 AND THIS IS -NOT- A PASSENGER JET! THIS IS THE US MILITARY.
I’ve lived here exactly eighteen years longer. And, bet you weren’t born here like I was. It was a plane. Just an ordinary passenger jetliner, just very low and circling.
Now those lights over the dump in the ’70s…hmm…

I’m not convinced it wasn’t just a military plane. At times it sounds lk a tornado but just know that what it sounds lk before your little town gets bombed is scary. Glad it wasn’t a tidal wave.

Some think it might be a chemical plant across the water in NJ opening release valves. I hear it where I live, too.
