Representative AOC Weighs In On Abortion Rights

Today, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went to the House Floor to address the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

She said in part, “Every single one of us has woken up today with less rights than we had yesterday. And pregnant people, in particular, are in more danger in the United States today than they were yesterday as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade….

It’s important for us to tackle this myth that this is somehow about babies or children or life. The same individuals who claim to be protecting life, fight against universal healthcare. Do they believe in universal childcare? Do they believe in life after birth?….

To all of those who are watching today’s events unfold in fear, in anger, in rage, in depression and anxiety, one thing remains steady: that we will not stop fighting until this is fixed. And I say that to my colleagues on the other side of the aisle: We are not going away. We stay. We fight. We push. And we will not be silenced.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

In January of 2019, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez was sworn-in as the youngest woman and youngest Latina ever to serve in Congress. Her first piece of legislation was the Green New Deal resolution, which envisions a 10-year national mobilization, akin to FDR’s New Deal, that would put millions to work in good-paying, union jobs repairing the nation’s infrastructure, reducing air and water pollution, and fighting the intertwined economic, social, racial and climate crises crippling the country.
