Helping Build Democracy That Represents Us All: On Nat’l Voter Registration Day Citizen Action NY Visits Rikers Island To Register Eligible Voters
Citizen Action of New York Visits Rikers Island and Other Locations Across NY Registering Eligible Voters
Albany, NY – Citizen Action of New York is organizing voter outreach through six regional chapters across the state on National Voter Registration Day. Rosemary Rivera, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York had this to say:
“Our organizers across the state are leading the charge on voter registration, extending our reach by visiting places like Rikers Island, to ensure all who are eligible register and raising awareness on voting rights. At Citizen Action of New York we are committed to ensuring all New Yorkers no matter your zip code, background, or race — inclusive of those in local jails — can participate fully and equally in the electoral process. If we’re going to build a democracy that truly represents us all, the best solution is closing registration gaps through on-the-ground voter outreach that meets often disenfranchised communities.
Our democracy is under threat from big money donors who seek to keep an outsized influence on our elections and legislators who wish to hoard power and stifle change. Too many are blocked or discouraged from voting — especially those who are low-income and people of color — in an attempt to drown out the voices of everyday New Yorkers.
We believe that our leaders should be chosen by voters, not Wall Street billionaires. When the registered voting population doesn’t reflect the population as a whole, we end up with a distorted democracy. If we are to create a New York where the needs of all people are met and there is equal opportunity to reach one’s full potential, we must utilize our right to vote.”
Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots membership organization with seven chapters and affiliates across New York State. We work on issues important to our communities, including fair elections, equitable school funding, housing for all, environmental justice, and possibility not punishment.
