A message from Stephanie Wu Winter

Thank you for having me on today’s SI Hunger Task Force meeting!

This is the link to the sign on letter, which includes basic details on the program and the full text of the letter. While Summer EBT for 2024 has already been approved on the federal level, states need to opt-in to participate by January 1, 2024. The goal of the sign on letter is to demonstrate to Governor Hochul that this program has broad support amongst organizations in New York and encourage the administration to opt in and allocate the necessary administrative funds in the state’s budget.

We do NOT have specifics on how this will exactly be administered in New York, as the State first needs to opt-in and then OTDA will issue guidance on how the program will roll out in New York. This is the USDA link on Summer EBT, it also includes a FAQ, which speaks to eligibility, certification and verification within the legislation. The guidance is “children eligible for Summer EBT include children who in the instructional year immediately preceding the summer or during the summer operational period eligible” – so school aged children. Summer EBT would work together with other existing nutrition assistance programs, like summer meals, SNAP, and WIC.

Best,
Stephanie

The SI Hunger Task Force is not a pantry. Instead, we connect community members to pantries and pantries to community and government resources.
