New Staten Island Migrant Shelter Rumors – Now At Canterbury House In Rosebank – Low-Income Rentals Mainly For Seniors
A Joint Statement from Borough President Vito Fossella, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, and Councilmember Kamillah Hanks on Potential for Migrant Shelter in Canterbury House
Continue below the joint statement to learn more about the apartment complex the politicians are concerned about.
Once again, there are rumors swirling that more migrants will be sent to Staten Island. This time, to the Canterbury House located in Rosebank. As always, we take these concerns very seriously.
The seniors who live there and the people of Rosebank do not deserve the added stress and difficulty that comes with having a migrant shelter airdropped into their community, the likes of which was done to Travis, Willowbrook, Midland Beach and Arrochar.
We are opposed to any further shelters being placed on Staten Island. We are doing our due diligence with the appropriate City and State agencies and are working closely together to make sure that the facilities at Canterbury House remain fully accessible to, and usable by, only the seniors who live there.
According to Episcopal Asset Map, “St. John’s built and owns Canterbury House, an 84 unit apartment providing affordable housing to nearly 100 senior citizens. The Canterbury Activity Center is a 1 to 2 day a week Adult Social Day Care operated by volunteers from the parish and the community.
Attendees include residents of Canterbury House and other seniors living on Staten Island. Activities include annual health fairs, exercise classes, lectures, presentations from the Office of Emergency Management, Visiting Nurses, NYPD, FDNY, etc.”
Low Income Housing.us states about this apartment complex: “Canterbury House Staten Island is a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit apartment located Staten Island, NY.
If you are looking for an affordable housing option, these rental apartments are supported by the LIHTC and having the applicable program rent and income restrictions.
The LIHTC gives incentives to builders and developers to provide affordable housing to low income persons. The maximum rent charged is based on the AMI, Area Median Income. This apartment may still be unaffordable to low income persons due to this AMI. Check the current rental rates to see if this is affordable to you”
