TODAY IN NYC: SENATOR GILLIBRAND, PRESIDENT BIDEN, DR. BIDEN, PRIDE LIVE ANNOUNCE HISTORIC OPENING OF STONEWALL NATIONAL MONUMENT VISITOR CENTER

Editor’s note: From the Wikipedia entry: “The Stonewall riots, also known as the Stonewall uprisingStonewall rebellion, or simply Stonewall, were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. Although the demonstrations were not the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities, they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.”

NEW YORK, NY – Friday, June 28th at 4:00 PM: U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, President Joe Biden, Dr. Jill Biden, Pride Live co-founders Diana Rodriguez and Ann Marie Gothard, celebrity advocates, and more will join together to announce the historic opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC).

Amidst the historic backdrop of Greenwich Village, the iconic Stonewall Inn stood as a beacon of resilience on June 28th, 1969, when the Stonewall Rebellion took place. The new Visitor Center, located at 51 Christopher Street, was once part of the iconic Stonewall Inn and now stands next to it. The new space aims to honor the legacy of the Stonewall Rebellion while serving as a hub for learning about LGBTQIA+ history and the ongoing struggle for freedom.

The SNMVC officially opens on Friday, June 28, and entry for the public is free of charge. For more information on hours and the visitor experience, please visit https://stonewallvisitorcenter.org/
