BP Fossella, CM Hanks to Break Ground on New Track and Field at I.S. 61

Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella and Councilmember Kamillah Hanks break ground on a new project to install a new track and field at I.S. 61. The groundbreaking took place at a press conference at I.S. 61 on Wednesday, June 26th at 10:00 AM.
The existing playground at I.S. 61 has long needed repair, especially the track and sports facilities. Borough President Fossella addressed the need for renovations with a $700,000 capital funding allocation to construct an all-new track and multi-use field. Councilmember Hanks also contributed an additional $400,000 to help with the track and field renovations.

Borough President Vito Fossella was joined by Kamillah Hanks Council Member-D49 to break ground on a project to install an all-new track and multi-use field at Morris (I.S. 61) Intermediate School.
The existing playground at I.S. 61 has long needed repair, especially the track and sports facilities. Borough President Fossella addressed the need with an allocation of $700,000 in capital funding for the construction of the track and multi-use field.
Council Member Hanks contributed an additional $400,000 in capital funding to help with the renovations.
“What you see today will be totally transformed in a few months and this is what the new product will look like with a new field and track around it,” said Borough President Fossella. “The common theme about sports is that everyone works together with one goal, one mission — and you work hard. And the people behind me did just that.”
Morris Intermediate School Principal Kuzaliwa Campbell said the field is more than just about sports as he thanked Borough President Fossella and Council Member Hanks for their allocations.
“We know athletics is linked to cognitive ability, to wellness, to social and emotional learning,” said Principal Campbell. “We know how vital sports and activities are to young people and their development. This field is vital on so many different levels.”

The Office of the Borough President has a responsibility to advocate for the entire Borough of Staten Island and all its residents, and represents the Borough's interests within City government. The Borough President communicates directly with the Mayor and the City Council to emphasize Staten Island’s budget priorities. In addition, the Borough President is responsible for reviewing major land use decisions and proposing sites for city facilities within the Borough.
