Editor’s note: Staten Islander previously reported on the planned bus service reductions possibly coming to Staten Island, along with the letter from local politicians to Governor Hochul about a non-voting board member’s conduct at a recent meeting.
According to the National Night Out campaign website, “National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
“Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories, and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.”

The MTA leaders thanked officers at the end-of-line station for keeping the subway system safe and spoke with riders at the terminal. The leaders also thanked City workers distributing information about the Fair Fares program, which allows eligible customers to receive a 50% discount on subway, bus, or Access-A-Ride fares.
“NYPD is the essence of great policing,” said Chair Lieber. “They do a great job every day, particularly the Transit Bureau who are making a huge difference – subway crime in New York is way down. New Yorkers and transit riders need to feel safe, and it’s because of the NYPD we’re getting there. We’re so grateful to the Transit Bureau and these great NYPD officers for their dedication to serve riders.”
