Veterans Day Events In New York City For Staten Islanders: Fifth Avenue Parade On Monday, Assembly At Sacred Heart School

For Staten Islanders looking to celebrate our veterans, there are several events going on this week.  On Monday, the 105th annual New York City Veterans Day Parade marches up Fifth Avenue. On Wednesday the 13th, there is an assembly at Sacred Heart School.  All are welcome to honor our veterans at this event.

Staten Islander News also recently covered the Veterans Round Table hosted by Senator Gillibrand and State Senator Scarcella-Spanton. Senator Lanza also hosted the Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony earlier this year.

Following is the United War Veterans Council announcement:

105TH Annual New York City Veterans Day Parade Will March Up Fifth Avenue on November 11

Honor Ruck, 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s Salute to Service, and Wreath-Laying Ceremony Honoring Service Members Will Precede Nation’s Largest Veterans Day Celebration

NEW YORK, NY – On Monday, November 11, beginning at 12:30 PM, the 105th annual New York City Veterans Day Parade – the nation’s largest commemoration of service – will march up Fifth Avenue from East 25th to East 45th Streets in honor of our nation’s veterans. The parade, which is produced each year by the United War Veterans Council (UWVC), is expected to feature nearly 300 marching and vehicle units and welcome 20,000 participants from across America, representing every service branch of the military and every era. Thousands of veterans, military members, service organizations, and youth cadets will participate, with marching bands, floats, motorcycles and vintage vehicles adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Ahead of this year’s parade, the UWVC and partners will also host a series of ramp-up events. On Sunday, November 10, veterans and active military will participate in an Honor Ruck (fitness march) from the Eternal Light Flagstaff at Madison Square Park to the World Trade Center Reflecting Pools. The ruck will end with a speaking program, featuring 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s President & CEO and United States Air Force Veteran Elizabeth L. Hillman, alongside the United States Marine Corps, as part of the Museum’s annual Salute to Service, a tribute which honors those who served in the military, as well as the families and communities that support them.

On Monday, November 11, immediately before the Parade, the annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony will take place, with wreaths presented by veteran representatives, public officials, foreign allies, and senior military leaders.

“For 105 years, the New York City Veterans Day Parade has honored the courageous men and women who fight to protect our way of life here in the United States,” said Mark Otto, President and Executive Director of the United War Veterans Council. “This Veterans Day, we’re renewing our commitment to celebrating their bravery, their service, and their patriotism. I thank our Grand Marshal, our Honorary Marshals, volunteers, sponsors, and thousands of parade participants from across America for joining us and helping to make this year’s parade such a resounding success.”
“As a Marine, it’s an honor to serve as Grand Marshal of this year’s NYC Veterans Day Parade, especially as we celebrate the 249th birthday of the Marine Corps and honor 105 years of this incredible parade,” said Dakota Meyer, U.S. Marine and Grand Marshal of the NYC Veterans Day Parade. “It’s a privilege to represent Marines and veterans of all generations who return to our communities, carrying with them the values of unity, hope, and resilience. Together, we stand as a testament to the strength that binds us as a nation and inspires a future grounded in service and unity.”
“It’s been a tremendous honor to represent the United States Marine Corps – just one day after its 249th birthday – in this year’s Veterans Day Parade,” said Mercedes Elias, U.S. Marine Veteran and Honorary Marshal of the NYC Veterans Day Parade. “As a proud Marine veteran, I look forward to this celebration every year as a chance to stand with my fellow servicemembers, reflect on our service, and continue this 105-year-old tradition, and I look forward to marching again in next year’s parade.”
“After more than 30 years of service as a Marine, I’m incredibly proud to help lead this year’s Veterans Day parade as an Honorary Marshal,” said John Escalante, U.S. Marine Veteran and Honorary Marshal of the NYC Veterans Day Parade. “Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that brave men and women make every day to protect our rights, our freedoms, and our country, and I am grateful to everyone who came out today to celebrate our nation’s veterans.”
The featured service for this year’s parade was the United States Marine Corps, which celebrated its 249th birthday on Sunday, November 10. The parade was led by Grand Marshal Dakota Meyer, a distinguished United States Marine and the second-youngest recipient of the prestigious Medal of Honor, as well as Honorary Marshals Mercedes Elias and John Escalante, who are also U.S. Marine Veterans.
Produced by the UWVC, the Parade is the nation’s largest commemoration of service, with nearly 300 marching and vehicle units, and 20,000 participants from across America, representing every service branch of the military and every era since World War II. The parade was established in 1919 following the armistice agreement that was signed on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 2018, that ended hostilities during WWI.

Perhaps most importantly, Dakota is the father of two beautiful daughters.
