Local Politicians, Community Members Stand With Holtermann’s Bakery On Staten Island After Comments By Whoopi Goldberg They Refused To Serve Her For Political Reasons
BP Fossella Visits Holtermann’s Bakery To Stand Up for Beloved Small Business Serving Staten Island for 145 Years
Fossella and Owner Jill Bowers Holtermann Will Treat Customers to a Close-up Look at an Honest Business
Editor’s note: This press conference is in response to Whoopi Goldberg’s comments during her birthday celebration on The View, where she said the following: “…I should tell you that Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me…. they said that their ovens had gone down and all kinds of stuff,… but folks went and got them anyway which is why I’m not telling you who made them… it can’t be because I’m a woman but perhaps they did not like my politics but that’s OK…”
Standing strong with Holtermann’s Bakery!

Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella joined members of the Holtermann family to stand up for the beloved bakery in the face of unwarranted controversy, at a press conference by the Borough President held on Friday, November 15th at 12:30 PM.
Borough President Fossella was joined by Jill Bowers Holtermann representing the bakery and Holtermann family, as well as loyal customers and several other politicians including Senator Scarcella-Spanton and Assemblymember Pirozzolo.
The Borough President and guests had an open look at an honest business, and rallied support for Holtermann’s Bakery to put the recent controversy to rest.
Holtermann’s Bakery is an iconic, longstanding Staten Island institution. As the oldest continuously operating bakery in New York State, Holtermann’s has been serving baked goods to Staten Islanders and customers from around the city for over 145 years.
An ongoing issue with the establishment’s boilers prevented the bakery from initially being able to fulfill an order by Whoopi Goldberg, a misunderstanding which led to the current media attention

I like that everyone stood together on this. We need more of that. Otherwise we get what we had. We can’t have the left and right fighting like that twd each other . We need to come together behind real values that make sense in the world. To me, there’s no greater value than taking the time out to eat amazing food.
You may think this Wabbit eats grass and carrots, but believe you me, I know good eats.
Radishes. And, ofc the onions. (Speaking of onions, did anyone else read AJ got his web site back? Was that all just an Onion troll job? If so, that tops Elon! hahah)
I’ve never had this dessert, and probably won’t. Dah Beet Us.
“For my grandmother’s generation, the Charlotte Russe symbolized something within their reach that tasted really special,” said Stanley Ginsberg, co-author of Inside the Jewish Bakery: Recipes and Memories from the Golden Age of Jewish Baking.
Suffice it to say, New Yorkers were enamored with what they came to call their “Brooklyn ambrosia”—enough so that the dish received swooning mention in Betty Smith’s iconic 1943 novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Weird. There was another reference to “A Tree Grows In Brooklyn,” and I was sitting here and I think walking the dog helped.
It was the article on the Tree of Hell, wasn’t it?! Anyone

Also, how have you never had one of these? You must be from the North Shore. I’ve probably had every confection in their showcase.
And, I weigh in at 135 and I’m 5’11”.
I’ve never had, either.
By me, we have Renato’s and Alfonso’s. Cookie Jar, too, on Forest.
Of course, being from BK, I stand by Villabate Alba as best.
Holtermans I’ve seen driving on Authur Kill. Never stopped in, bc we have too many good pastries in my own area!
