Blue Mailboxes Removed From Port Richmond, Staten Island Neighborhood: Local Pols Ask Post Office To Return Them, Tighten Security
We covered this press conference on Saturday; you can learn more about the issues here.
Staten Island politicians gathered with Port Richmond Strong/ North Shore Alliance in front of the post office on Port Richmond Avenue to speak about the removal of convenient blue mail collection boxes, which used to be scattered throughout the area. Now there is not even one collection box in the whole of the 10302 zip code. This forces residents to travel to another neighborhood to mail their letters. Surveys shared by the civic group demonstrated that the 10302 zip code uses the Post Office more than those in other zip codes, who primarily use the internet. In Port Richmond, 4 out of every 10 residents uses postal mail in order to communicate with relatives and to pay bills.
All of the local politicians at the press conference are asking that the Post Office return the boxes as soon as possible so that residents can use this essential federal service once again. Representatives included Asm. Pirozzolo, Sen. Scarcella-Spanton, Rep. Malliotakis, and BP Fossella.
