Photowalk Series: The Industrial Waterfront

Saturday February 22nd. 11am–12:30pm

Editor’s note: The following information was provided by the Alice Austen House about the Industrial Waterfront Photowalk, during which the below photos (and those included in the sideshow video) were taken.  This appears to be old Navy Homeport, which was decommissioned after the end of the Cold War, when it was no longer needed.

From DockNYC:

Homeport is located in the Upper New York Bay, on the eastern side of Staten Island between the St. George Ferry Terminal and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Homeport is bounded on the west by Front Street and adjacent to the historic Stapleton neighborhood and the new Stapleton Waterfront, a 35-acre stretch of public open space. The US Navy built the Homeport pier in the late 1980’s to berth destroyer-class vessels; currently the pier is the home location for FDNY’s Marine 9 and frequently hosts visiting naval vessels. The pier deck is available at the Homeport Site.

From the event announcement:

Bring your camera or rent a Polaroid and join us as we explore the industrial waterfront of Staten Island’s North Shore.

The walk will meet inside the museum’s contemporary galleries for a brief presentation on various artistic interpretations of the waterfront landscape. Following the presentation, we will depart as a group, starting our route at Buono Beach and following along Bay and Front Streets to Stapleton’s Waterfront Park (approx two mile round trip)*.

For those that wish to return to the museum post-walk, we will be hosting a Collaborative Zine Making Workshop, creating a group zine with photographs taken throughout the walk.

Polaroid Cameras will be available to rent free of charge and we will have Polaroid i-Type, Polaroid 600 and Instax Wide film available to purchase.

*Accessibility Note: The walk route is mostly flat. Participants should be able to comfortably walk two miles, or one mile if choosing to end at Stapleton Waterfront Park.

My name is Sean Fitzpatrick, but you can call me Fitz. I'm a professional photographer from the borough of (Shaolin) Staten Island. I have been shooting since I was 21 years old once I received my first camera after I graduated from the University of Seton Hall. Photography originally started off as a hobby, but now it's become my career. It is the best way I can express who I am as an artist and individual.
