Limitless Monday – Independent thinking

I dated a girl once who on our second date lost her mind at the mention of the name Elon Musk. “He didn’t invent Tesla”, she told me viciously, “he just got lucky!”. We didn’t reach date number three.

There was a girlfriend I dated for over a year. At the mention of the name Trump, she would froth at the mouth and there followed an outpouring of venom. She ended her mad outburst by saying she couldn’t date a Trump supporter. This aggressive explosion was during the first few weeks of our relationship. I decided to keep my cards close to my chest as I sat in Starbucks wishing I was dating someone else.

On another date, the lucky lady raised the subject of Trump without any goading on my part as we drank our first and last gin and tonic together. She felt it necessary to tell me that all Trump supporters were losers.

The purpose of this article is not to debate whether Trump or his sidekick, Elon Musk, are losers, charlatans, or otherwise. I wish to discuss why holding strong views is potentially unhealthy and unwise.

The US is not alone when it comes to the majority of its population supporting just one political party. In the US only 28% of voters consider themselves independent.

While my dates may not like Trump as a person they cannot honestly say that they disagree with all his policies. With a clear head of course. The same can be said if you are a staunch Trump supporter. Viewed logically, there must be at least one or two Democrat policies that are sensible.

Holding strong immovable views can show that we have not looked at the bigger picture; we have probably been brainwashed. We could, in fact, be part of the problem.

While I write this, I realize that I hold strong views on certain subjects. I become red in the face at the slightest mention of a few key words. I understand, however, that some of my thinking can be too radical and is driven by a single bad experience. If I allow myself to calm down for a moment, I can see that there are two sides to the situation, and that my view is certainly not the correct one. I readily admit I am a work in progress in this regard.

The healthiest approach to take, in my opinion, is the independent route. Supporting one political party is like saying you agree with everything that party stands for and nothing the other party holds close to their heart. Logically, that just can’t be right. As an independent, you get to pick and choose. You are by definition open minded. You are not about to be brainwashed by a corrupt smooth talking politician!

Going back to my dates for a moment. These deluded individuals were obviously staunch Democrats and Trump haters. If Trump handed back $5,000 to each US citizen from the savings Musk makes from his government efficiency work, these women would still find fault while happily spending the cash on a new pair of shoes.

I don’t want to date or spend time with someone with tunnel vision where they see the world as either black or white. There is never any compromise with these kinds of people. These relationships rarely turn out well.

This isn’t just about politics; it relates to every aspect of life. Avoid taking sides. Stand above the noise, and choose the best ideas that work for you and your family. Let the others scrap it out, wasting their time and energy while you spend your precious time on building your perfect life.

Happy Monday!
