Girl Scouts of Greater New York Builds Courage, Confidence, Character, Prepares Them For Brighter Futures

Staten Islander News sat down with Karen Lundgard, acting president of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York. We discussed the core mission of the Girl Scouts, which is to build Courage, confidence, and character to help girls make the world a better place.

As Mia’s father says in a letter to impart a lesson, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all…”

And in Cinderella 2015, the mother teaches her daughter to always, “Have courage and be kind.” So these are important life lessons.

They accomplish this by building community, providing a safe space for girls to be themselves, and by providing hands-on activities for them to learn about themselves and the world around them.

One of the key parts of the Girl Scouts experience is entrepreneurship, as in selling cookies to raise money for the troop and for the organization as a whole. They teach this also through sisterhood and providing a safe space. They provide hands-on education and experiences to build life skills and character.

Troop 6000

We discussed Girl Scouts Troop 6000, which is very special troop for girls in the NYC shelter system. Since it is for girls experiencing homelessness, materials and activities are provided free of charge. They get the full scout experience, including camp, without cost, where they wouldn’t otherwise be able to participate.

Another crucial part of the Girl Scouts is the outdoors. Going to camp, which for most girls is their first time away from street lights and city conveniences. They’re taught to have respect for the wilderness, as well as survival skills, orienteering, and other critical skills.

Girl Scouts was founded in 1912, and their core mission and values have remained steadfast. Girls across the United States can benefit by joining, and they’ll learn a lot and have enriching experiences.
