Staten Island, NY – On the steps of Borough Hall, amid a large, jubilant crowd of coaches, friends, and family, Borough President Vito Fossella and Monsignor Farrell High School President Lou Tobacco honored the Farrell wrestling team for their tremendous victories in the CHSAA City and State tournaments during a celebration this past Friday.
Earlier this year, the Monsignor Farrell High School wrestling team claimed the CHSAA City and State titles, culminating a season defined by accolades and excellence.
The Lions captured the CHSAA City Championship on February 8th, defeating Iona Prep High School with a score of 489 points. They followed that performance on February 15th by racking up 268.5 points to defeat second-place Iona Prep and third-place St. Francis of Buffalo in the State tournament. The victory was made all the more sweet, as it was claimed on Farrell’s home territory.
This year’s victory marks Monsignor Farrell High School’s third state wrestling title, following the 2009 team of Coach Lou Destefano and the 1990 team of Coach John Gallucci.

To honor this tremendously accomplished wrestling season, the immense teamwork and camaraderie shared among the teammates, and both their individual and collective accomplishments, Borough President Fossella delivered each player and coach a Certificate of Appreciation in Borough Hall Plaza. President Lou Tobacco presented each teammate and coach with championship rings.

“We couldn’t be more proud of these young men. Thanks to the love of the parents and the grandparents and the siblings, because without that beginning, you can’t shape these men into the good young men they’ve become. Staten Island is proud of them, New York State is proud of them, and we thank Mr. Tobacco, the coaches, and everybody who made these men true champions,” Borough President Fossella said.
“These young men—our Faithful Men—are the embodiment of grit, discipline, and brotherhood,” said President Lou Tobacco. “Their dedication on and off the mat inspires our entire school community and reflects the strength of the Farrell Family.”
“This team bought into our vision from day one,” said Head Coach Pete Hamm. “They trained with purpose, competed with heart, and supported one another every step of the way. This championship is a reflection of their commitment to each other and to the proud tradition of Farrell wrestling.”
