NYC HEALTH + HOSPITALS ANNOUNCES NEW SEASON OF FARMERS MARKETS NEAR PATIENT CARE SITES

Farmers markets make fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible for patients, visitors, staff, and the larger community

Editor’s note: GrowNYC, who runs farmers markets for Staten Island and other locations, attended a press conference with Senator Schumer and other organizations to call for the proposed cuts to SNAP and Medicaid to be removed from the budget bill.  These cuts would harm seniors in our communities, along with low-income people who also work but cannot earn enough to put food on their tables.  Children would especially be harmed, as many of the families who qualify for SNAP have children.  We also discussed this issue with a legal representative at Legal Services NYC. The City of Bayonne also provides farmers markets for its residents, with vouchers available for low-income seniors who want to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms. The NYC Department for the Aging also provides coupons and vouchers to local residents who want to purchase locally grown fresh produce from the farmers markets in their community.  The latest research on aging and health shows that the very best way to prevent and, in some cases, reverse the chronic conditions of aging is proper nutrition and exercise.

We asked NYC Health + Hospitals if there are any Farmers’ Markets on Staten Island, as there are none in the list below.  They responded, “Our partner GrowNYC has a couple of farmers’ markets in Staten Island:

Find a Greenmarket or Farmstand | GrowNYC  The map on that page shows two markets, one at Snug Harbor and one at the Staten Island Mall.  Both are open now for the season.  Islanders can also get involved in the Community Supported Agriculture we have covered in the past.

(New York, NY – June 16, 2025) – NYC Health + Hospitals today launched a new season of farmers markets hosted at public hospitals and community health centers across the city. The farmers markets, operated by local partners GrowNYC, Harvest Home, Mi Ranchito Farm, and Uptown Grand Central, make it easy for anyone in the community to access fresh, local fruits and vegetables at an affordable price. Various payment options are available to help New Yorkers take advantage of farmers markets, and Fresh Food Box sites, including EBT/SNAP, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons, and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) coupons.

In addition, GrowNYC offers the Fresh Food Boxes program year-round at NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter. The boxes offer seasonal, local produce well below market price through the power of collaborative purchasing. Individuals can sign up for the program at https://www.grownyc.org/foodbox/UGC
