Advancing The Consumer Protection and Automotive Transparency Act

Editor’s note: In a similar vein of consumer protection, Senator Sanders is advancing legislation to stop television advertising for pharmaceuticals.  The US is one of only two countries in the world that allows this type of direct to consumer ads by drug companies.  The CPSC recently voted against implementing consumer safety standards in lithium ion batteries despite the numerous, difficult to extinguish fires that have already been caused by these devices.

As Chair of the Subcommittee on Consumer Fraud Protection, I’m proud to advance legislation like the Consumer Protection and Automotive Transparency Act, which strengthens the rights of New York consumers. Far too often, buyers are presented with misleading terms about the quality and composition of interior automotive materials. This act will require clear and accurate labeling—ensuring that consumers know exactly what they are purchasing, whether it’s genuine leather, synthetic leather, or alternative materials. When New Yorkers spend their hard-earned money on a vehicle, they deserve full transparency.

This legislation is part of a broader effort to promote honesty and accountability in the marketplace. By holding manufacturers to a higher standard of transparency, the Consumer Protection and Automotive Transparency Act helps build trust between consumers and businesses. Informed consumers make better choices—and when companies are required to be truthful about their products, the entire marketplace becomes more fair and competitive.”

Moreover, this legislation sends a clear message beyond the auto industry: deceptive marketing practices will not be tolerated in New York State. As we continue to confront increasingly sophisticated advertising tactics across sectors, it is essential that we uphold strong standards for truth in labeling and consumer protection. The Consumer Protection and Automotive Transparency Act is an important step forward in that mission, and I look forward to continuing this work to safeguard the rights of New Yorkers.
