NYC Mayoral, Council Races: Citizen Action of NY Celebrates Success Of Endorsed Candidates
Citizen Action of New York Celebrates the Success of Endorsed Candidates including Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s Primary Election
Editor’s note: Citizen Action announced their candidate choices back in April, and while not all of their selections won, a number of them, featured below, won their respective primaries.
(New York, New York) – Citizen Action of New York proudly celebrates the success of our endorsed candidates in the 2025 New York City democratic primary elections. We are especially thrilled to congratulate Zohran Mamdani on his decisive victory over Andrew Cuomo, whose attempt to claw his way back into political relevance was a direct threat to everyday New Yorkers.
“Zohran Mamdani’s win is more than a political victory —it’s proof that when we organize, we can defeat even the most entrenched forces of the political machine,” said Carolyn Martinez-Class and Rebecca Garrard, Co-Executive Directors at Citizen Action of New York. “Voters overwhelmingly chose Zohran because he’s a leader who shows up, organizes with working people, and isn’t afraid to challenge the powerful. He laid out a bold vision for a New York City that is affordable and affords every New Yorker dignity. This election was a people-powered rejection of everything Andrew Cuomo and the Democratic establishment represents: top-down politics, backroom deals, and policies that prioritize billionaires over working families.”
Citizen Action also applauds the victories of our other endorsed candidates across the city who proved that grassroots organizing and values-driven leadership can and will overcome special interests and establishment power. We congratulate:
-
Antonio Reynoso, Candidate for Brooklyn Borough President
-
Harvey Epstein, Candidate for City Council District 2
-
Pierina Sanchez, Candidate for City Council District 14
-
Justin Sanchez, Candidate for City Council District 17
-
Crystal Hudson, Candidate for City Council District 35
-
Alexa Aviles, Candidate for City Council District 38
-
Shahana Hanif, Candidate for City Council District 39
“The message is loud and clear: New York City is done with the political status quo, and New Yorkers are hungry for a different type of leadership,” Martinez-Class and Garrard continued. “This primary was a critical step, but it’s not the finish line. We must continue organizing, mobilizing, and building the political power needed to transform New York from the ground up.”
