Snug Harbor Cultural Center Wetlands Boardwalk, Viewing Platform Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Wheelchair Accessible Space
Regarding this new boardwalk, Snug Harbor’s Meredith Sladek had the following to say. It is open to all residents and makes this particular natural area available for viewing even to those who are wheelchair bound:
The new Kissel Gate entrance, boardwalk, and viewing platform offer Staten Islanders an additional entrance to the Snug Harbor grounds and a safe, wheelchair-accessible space to admire the five acres of state-mapped wetlands. This project was designed by Elizabeth Kennedy Landscape Architect, PLLC and constructed by Sawera Interiors Corp. This project was funded by the NYS Regional Economic Development Council, the Booth Ferris Foundation, and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

On Monday, Snug Harbor leadership and local elected officials gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the center’s new Kissel Avenue entrance, located near Linden Street, as well as its wetlands boardwalk and viewing platform.
“I’m no stranger to this neighborhood, I don’t live far away, so I’ve heard from the neighbors for a really long time that they want to be able to have access to Snug Harbor in an easy way. I’m really excited about this. Thank you to my partners in government and thank you to Snug Harbor for always being an amazing cultural center for Staten Island,” said State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton.
“It’s a really happy day for us and the neighbors on the west side, who for a long time had to walk a fair ways to get to a gate to access Snug Harbor,” said Snug Harbor President and CEO Jessica Baker Vodoor.
“The new Snug Harbor Wetlands Boardwalk and Viewing Platform gives Staten Islanders a place to experience of borough’s natural beauty while learning about the critical role wetlands play in protecting our city from flooding and preserving local wildlife. I thank Snug Harbor and the Parks Department for their continued investment in our community,” said Assemblymember Charles Fall.
“Snug Harbor remains a jewel and the more we can get people on the campus to enjoy what God has given us with the surroundings here, the better we are,” said Borough President Vito Fossella. “This is about making things better for the people of Staten Island, coming together, collaborating, and doing what’s right.”
Senator Jess also said, “Our natural landscapes are what make this borough so special, and Snug Harbor showcases some of our best green spaces. As we celebrate this new gateway to the wetlands, we also continue our commitment to preserving these spaces and making them accessible to all Staten Islanders.”
