BP Fossella, Local Civic to Rally Against New City of Yes Development in Midland Beach
Editor’s note: This is not the first City of Yes project to be attempted in Staten Island neighborhoods that local politicians, especially BP Fossella, have pushed back against. Other projects have included several BESS charging stations
Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella will raise the alarm on a City of Yes development taking place in Midland Beach at a press conference at 374 Greeley Avenue on Wednesday, January 7th at 11:00 AM.
The City of Yes for Housing Opportunity zoning amendments made sweeping changes to the kinds of developments permitted in low-density residential zones, such as those which comprise much of Staten Island. Borough President Fossella has long warned that the City of Yes would bring unwanted and inappropriate developments to Staten Island that would threaten to fundamentally change the character of the borough.
Midland Beach residents are now raising concerns about a new development taking place at 374 Greeley Avenue, which is planned to construct 10 two-family town houses on the site of one single-family residence. The developer of the Greeley Avenue project is known for two similar density-increasing developments: 5 two-family homes at a site on Oakdale Street, and 4 multi-family homes at a site on Gibson Avenue, both in Great Kills, among other projects across the borough.
At the press conference, Borough President Fossella joined the Midland Beach Civic Association to stand against this project for its potential to irresponsibly increase density and fundamentally alter this residential section of Midland Beach.
