US Coast Guard Funding Lapse May Cause Pay Breaks Starting With March 1st Pay Period: Rep. Malliotakis Weighs In

Share

Congresswoman Malliotakis is pushing for the US Coast Guard servicemembers to be paid using the special method employed during the shutdown in November. As some of our readers may know, the government partially shut down this time due to the failure to agree upon a budget for DHS. Despite the extremely high amount that they previously received (around $190 Billion), apparently this excess is not available to the Coast Guard automatically to continue their pay.  For comparison, DHS received $89.8 billion in FY 24 (we are now in FY25).  We also covered the Senate hearing on the situation in Minnesota were armed and masked ICE agents came 3,000 strong to that state and began conducting arrest operations.  They also killed two American citizens and arrested several others, many of whom are alleging abuses during the arrest and the detention as well.  We also covered a school superintendent from that area who discusses how ICE and DHS have been treating children in their care.  Below is the statement on the US Coast Guard’s website about paying their servicemembers, followed by Rep. Malliotakis’ statement and letter urging the president to intervene and ensure that Coast Guard members are paid timely and in full.

Government funding lapse

By MyCG Staff

Coast Guard funding lapsed at 12:00 a.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 14, after an appropriations measure was not enacted before the deadline. As required by law, the Service is now executing an orderly suspension of certain activities while continuing missions necessary to protect life, property, and national security.

Guidance for Military Members

Active-duty military members will still report for duty. You should have received your Feb. 15 paycheck on-time. You will continue performing excepted missions, including search and rescue, maritime safety and security, and environmental response.

Non-essential operations and support functions may be paused until funding is restored. Follow the guidance from your chain of command and refer to the Consolidated Lapse Guidance here for details on unit-specific exceptions.

Reservists on orders will perform the same excepted missions as active-duty members. Unless notified by your command, reserve members not on orders are not required to perform duties during the lapse.

Civilian Guidance

Excepted civilians will continue to work supporting critical missions. Non-exempt employees should follow instructions from their supervisors regarding orderly shutdown and furlough procedures.

Exempt employees are covered under separate funding and will continue to work. All civilian employees should have received a full paycheck from Pay Period 02 on Feb. 14.

Malliotakis Leads Push to Safeguard Coast Guard Pay During DHS Shutdown

(WASHINGTON, DC) — Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, along with a dozen lawmakers representing districts with a significant U.S. Coast Guard presence, sent the following letter to President Trump requesting that he intervene to ensure Coast Guard members are paid during the Department of Homeland Security shutdown by taking similar action to that taken during the October–November 2025 government shutdown, which protected pay for our military service members.

The lawmakers wrote, “We face another troubling situation. As a result of the current partial government shutdown, members of the United States Coast Guard—who serve under the Department of Homeland Security—are once again working without pay. These dedicated men and women continue to carry out critical homeland security missions. They safeguard our shores, secure our ports, interdict illegal narcotics, protect our maritime borders, and conduct lifesaving search-and-rescue operations with the courage and professionalism that have long defined this proud branch of our Armed Forces. At the same time, more than 41,000 active duty and activated Reserve Coast Guard members face the very real possibility of missing their next scheduled payday on February 27 if the Department of Homeland Security does not receive appropriations.”

Dear President Trump,

As Members of Congress representing districts with significant populations of United States Coast Guard servicemembers and their families, we write to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support of the men and women who serve in our nation’s Armed Forces and the families who stand beside them in service and sacrifice.

Your unwavering commitment to ensuring that our servicemembers are treated with the respect and dignity they
deserve has not gone unnoticed.

We are especially grateful for your leadership during last fall’s government shutdown, when you exercised every
available authority to ensure that servicemembers continued to receive their pay without interruption. Your decisive action brought much-needed certainty and stability to military families at a time of significant uncertainty.

Today, we face another troubling situation.

At the same time, more than 41,000 activeduty and activated Reserve Coast Guard members face the very real possibility of missing their next scheduled payday on February 27 if the Department of Homeland Security does not receive appropriations.

The Coast Guard is an essential branch of our armed services, and its members should never be used as leverage in
partisan disputes. It is deeply concerning that Coast Guard personnel are being placed in this position due to political
brinkmanship by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and other Democratic leaders who are choosing to play politics with our homeland security.

On behalf of the constituents we represent, many of whom serve in or directly support the Coast Guard, we
respectfully urge you to once again use every authority at your disposal to ensure that these dedicated servicemembers do not miss a paycheck. These brave men and women have faithfully upheld their oath to serve this
country without hesitation, and they deserve a government that upholds its obligation to them.

Thank you again for your leadership and your enduring support of America’s military families. We stand ready to
work with you to resolve this matter swiftly and ensure that those who protect our homeland are not left behind.
