For Staten Island’s Rep., Congestion Pricing Fight Is Not Over: MTA CEO Weighs In On Court Decision

We’ve previously reported on the initial action taken by the Trump Administration to revoke the federal highway authorization that allowed New York to institute Congestion Pricing.  Additionally, the borough president has stated that this tax just pushes the pollution into other communities, notably Staten Island and other surrounding areas which are car dependent and will be affected more than others. Ambulance response times are also shower than in the past, likely due to the shortage of sufficient workers due to low wages and poor working conditions for FDNY EMS. One can presently expect to be paid about as well as a fast food worker with no union protections – to risk their lives helping other New Yorkers.  In addition, Staten Island has among the longest commutes in the city at around 2 hours by public transportation.  Conversely, if there’s no traffic (prior to this new pricing), a driver could get from Port Richmond to downtown Manhattan by the Holland Tunnel in about a half hour to forty minutes.

Malliotakis: Congestion Pricing Fight Not Over

(NEW YORK, NY) — Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) released the following statement after a federal judge’s decision on New York City’s congestion pricing program:

“We are reviewing the judge’s decision, but believe the Trump Administration was well within its legal right to rescind Biden’s rubber-stamping of congestion pricing, which was done without a full and thorough Environmental Impact Statement as required by law. Secretary Duffy informed me that the administration will appeal this decision and keep fighting to protect the hardworking commuters from this unfair and burdensome congestion tax.”

Statement from MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber on Opinion and Order by U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman

“We’ve said it all along, and Judge Liman’s clear, detailed ruling leaves no doubt: congestion pricing is legal. It’s here to stay. And it works.

Traffic is down, business is up, and we’re making crucial investments in a transit system that moves millions of people a day.

Today—once again—Secretary Duffy failed and New York is winning.”
