Unlike traditional food pantries, the choice model allows individuals and families to select the foods that best meet their dietary, cultural, and household needs to create a more dignified and empowering experience for neighbors seeking support. In the last year, The Salvation Army Stapleton Corps Community served over 175,000 meals through their soup kitchen and food pantry efforts.

The Salvation Army Stapleton Corps Celebrates Grand Opening of Choice Food Pantry, Expanding Food Access for Staten Island Families

As food insecurity continues to impact families across Staten Island, The Salvation Army Stapleton Corps Community Center marked a major step forward in addressing community need with the grand opening of its newly remodeled Choice Food Pantry.

Community members, local leaders, and volunteers gathered on March 12 to celebrate the launch of the renovated pantry, which will expand access to nutritious groceries for families across the North Shore.

Unlike traditional food pantries that distribute pre-packed bags of food, the choice pantry model is designed to function more like a grocery store. Guests are able to browse shelves and select items based on their personal preferences, household size, and dietary needs. This approach not only reduces food waste but also restores a sense of autonomy and dignity, allowing individuals and families to make choices that reflect their cultural traditions, health considerations, and everyday routines.

The pantry also offers a range of options to meet special religious and ethical dietary needs, including kosher, halal, and plant-based foods, ensuring that all community members can access meals that align with their beliefs and lifestyles.

“This new space represents more than just a pantry; it’s a place where our neighbors can access food with dignity and choice,” said Lt. Esther Mobley, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army Stapleton Corps Community Center. “By offering a wider variety of options, including foods that meet cultural and dietary needs, we’re better able to serve every member of our community with respect and care.”

The remodeled pantry features an updated layout with clearly organized sections, fresh produce, and essential pantry staples. Volunteers are on hand to assist guests as they navigate the space, helping create a welcoming and supportive environment.
